What should i do to my '97 SR5?

The exterior is stock i havent done anything yet with it but i do want to lift it and have a new front bumper..but i dont know what kind.
The interior is the only thing i have even started and all i did there was get a new alpine deck installed. so i would like some ideas on what i should do to it.

Ohh yeah its also purple
and ill add pictures but not tooo sure how too.

IMO, The "lift" is something that should be done first before adding weight such as a bumper. The color can be changed with $800 at your local body shop. If you have the ability to save the money, then get a suspension lift.

if i went with the lift i was going to get a 3" suspension lift.. and like what is the best place for the paint also..

IMO:

Lift with front suspension to accommodate the extra weight of a bumper, deal with the stiff ride for a little.

Then tires, to match lift.

Then front bumper, which should be well supported with the lift you'd have installed.

Then exhaust, and so on

I have to agree with COB.....Lift first, then Tires, then bumper.....Purple ain't so bad.....at least it's a less common color!

As far as I'm concerned....and I am a little biased : , using Tundra Struts assemblies with a front Diff Drop from Toytec, 8 Wrap Land Cruiser coils, and some Landcruiser shocks for the rear, is probably your best bang for you buck! It costs about the same if not a little more than a spacer lift ($300.00 or so) but rides so much better!

The Tundra and Land Cruiser stuff can be bought from Wrecking yards, try to get some low mileage struts though. The diff drop could be bought from Toytec lifts (e-mail Dylan, as he has some pull! lol! He can get you a discount), also get some Top Plate spacers for the Tundra struts....gives you just a little more clearance. You can get the Landcruiser Shocks online...dont' ask me where, I didn't buy those.

If the money is eating a hole in your pocket go ahead and spend $100 on an exhaust. It will keep you satisfied for a little while and is not very expensive.

Definitely do the lift before putting on a bumper.

fightman80 that sounds like a cheaper idea(which is almost always better)... but how hard is it to install or get someone that does do it. oh and who is dylan?

I had to chime in. Welcome to the forum.:cheers: I have the exact same rig, year and color. I think Toyota calls it stellar blue, but yeah...So Gay 1. Ditch the rusting boards- it's like a free lift. 2. Suspension lift if you got the cash. I went with Toytec Ultimate lift. 3. Tires I went with the GY Wrangler Duratracs b/c they are supposed to be good offroad as well in the minnesnow. I got them mounted on 02 oem five stars. Can't wait til I have time to install lift and tires. 285/75's. 4. Bumpers after lift. I am going to have to keep an eye on your build for ideas for my future mods:snacker:

Do not repaint it as it will look like crap for $800, because that means it is only an exterior job, and not a complete tear down, thats besides the fact that the only places that are $800 to respray are maaco and i dont really want to see what their $800 paint job is.

The way I see it is...

Lift, making room for bigger tires down the road and get you over bigger obstacles. A lift will get you down harder trails than any other mod and reduce damage since you sit higher. Also improves the looks more.

tires, replace and up-size when worn out. I ran 31"s for years with my 3" lift.

sliders, replaces the running boards and will protect the doors and rockers. needed when you start doing harder trails.

under armor, replacement IFS skid, belly skid to protect the transfer case, gas tank skid to protect the low hanging vulnerable gas tank (shameless plug)

bumpers, replace when the stockers are beat up, aftermarket bumpers will increase approach and departure angles.

locker, Locker is low on the list because you should learn the vehicle and wheeling without it will build skill. The locker will get you doing harder lines and get you in more dangerous situations.

exhaust, after it rots off or is torn up from wheeling, not going to do much for performance


What is the deckplate mod? There are tons of threads, please search. Quickly, it is a deckplate from a boat that is mounted in the air filter box. When the cover is off you will have a little more power/mpg. When on it seals the box back up so there is less chance of ingesting water.

Its up to you on color. People do an array of different things. I sanded, primed with rustoleum automotive primer, sprayed with rustoleum metallic charcoal, and a coat of satin finish clear coat to dull my wheels shiny paint down.

I raptor bedlined (do it yourself kit off ebay) my grill and front bumper then spray painted it my color of choice.

Really cheap and really easy.

Plastidip, its a rubberized coating that is seemingly more durable than paint, requires no primer and no sanding, and is removable, its $7 a can at home depot.

I plastidipped my front bumper valance in December and it went through many harsh winter storms and is still there with no chips and is very clean too.
