Hey guys new to the forum here in the process of trying to find a decent 4runner to tow my 17th aluminum fishing boat with as my ford Exploder died on me last week.anyway I found a 2000 sr5 4x4 6 cylinder with a 5 speed manual transmission and the hood scoop. It has 150k on it but she is clean and everything works/runs/drives smooth....the rear axle case has a bit of surface rust under it nothing that made me nervous. Rear seals seem fine and the underbody/frame is in good condition as well. The current owner is the 3rd owner if I remember him correctly. He's not sure as to what maintenance had been done previously but he's had the car for 2 years and didn't put more than 5k on it because he drives 18 wheelers across the country most of the week. Tires havery about 60% tread left on them. What do you guys think is a fair price for me to pay?

What is the seller asking? And where are you located cuz prices vary on area?

Pretty sure your talking New York area then. $6300 is not a bad price for this and from what it looks like on the outside which is pretty clean I assume that the inside is as clean too. It's got a lot going for it with the 5 speed and fairly low miles and this would be the perfect vehicle to tow your boat with although I would do the tundra brake upgrade. If you offer $5700 and he comes back at $6000 I would take it
I plan on starting a little lower as he doesn't know if timing belt was ever done. Carfax shows hes the 4th owner car spent half its life in Virginia. No accidents. I'm getting a better look Wednesday but the interior was very clean as well from what I saw. Unsure if it was the locker....is this just a base sr5 model? Thanks for any opinions guys. Hopefully Wednesday I'll be the new owner of a 3rd gen.

If this is the case then yeah I would start lower. As to it being a base sr5 it doesn't look like it but that also doesn't mean it comes with a locker too. And you have a hood scoop that's like +15 hp

What he said. I'm not a manual tranny fan but if that's your preference it is a good deal if...you check it out WELL to avoid any surprises. Also tire condition, lack of maintenance records and any items coming up on their intervals are good parts/labor bargaining issues. Let us know how you fare...

I think that's a pretty fair price, but certainly aim for lower. No real records and 4 owners already leaves a lot to be questioned. If you can get him in that 5700 range, you'll be in a good place to keep some funds to cover the little things that pop up.
Also, get a REALLY good look at the frame. Being on the east coast and in the New England area for its life leaves me to question how good that frame actually is, so just be certain that you check the frame in good light and in all the common cancer spots. Take a center punch and push around feeling for softness that might be hidden by a coating coverup job in the recent past. Not saying this is the case but frame repairs are a bastard to deal with so the extra time prodding could save you a major headache.

Look at the inner part of the frame rail next to the muffler, above the rear lower control arm mount and about 18" forward of that. Use that pick and poke around, as mentioned. Post some pictures of that rear dif. Here's the "impact" of frame rust when you get rearended. My frame was weakened by rust. It even cracked 1/2 way up right in the place where the rust is the worst, but on the opposite side, next to the gas tank. I had the other side fixed. It was covered up with household foam crack spray insulation, bondo, and paint, when I bought it.
