What size Hi-Lift do I need?

48" is what I have and its just right for my rig

Depends on if you have a lift and how you will be using it I.E jacking points.. Most cases the smaller one will work just fine.

Unless you use the wheel lift strap you are correct. You need proper steel bumpers and/or sliders with proper hi lift points. My old bumpers had cut-outs for the hi lift fit in and lift safer, which safer is a relative term
 
after working with Overland Experts at the southeast overland rally, I'd recommend getting a 60". That's what they also recommended. The taller stanchion of the 60 allowed more area to grasp. If your runner is lifted, it takes that much more height to get to a lift point on it right? Once you are there, that is that much more grip area that is taken away.

Also, when lifting from the sliders, the stanchion gets really close to the side of the truck. With the 60, it will help keep the handle from going through the window if you were to drop the handle and the lift started doing its own movement.

I do have a 48" that I bought before hand, and now I wish I would have gone with a 60"

Just a thought.
 
I agree with FactoryRide. I would recommend getting the 60" if you plan to offroad at all.

If you only plan to use your hi-lift on flat level ground (highway to change a tire, etc), then the 48" will work fine. However, chances are you will have to place the jack much lower and/or lift higher than a few inches to become unstuck.
 
I respectfully disagree regarding the need for the additional 12" knowing you'll have a winch. In all my years of wheeling I have never used my Hi-Lift on the trail and that applies to most people I know. The longer ones just make carrying harder and when the sh!t hits the fan and a winch and standard recovery kit don't help you'll have the 48.

Not trying to argue a minor point, just expressing an honest opinion based on personal experience. If you don't have a winch the 60" may make sense but even then I would never bother with one. I owned a 60" but traded for a 48" when a friend desperately wanted one.

Since its only a $10 difference for the 60 I'll probably get it, shouldnt make too much of a difference carrying it since I got a Hi-lift mount for my baja rack.

Locks? On the bajarack mounts you mean? No there aren't any locks but I guess you could rig something up if you wanted. The reason I said to get the cover is because the hi lift jacks all rust fairly bad and that cover protects the mechanism of the jack and protects your paint from rusty water getting all over it.
