What size monitor fits in place of factory HU ??

How big of a monitor can I fit in place of the factory headunit on my '05 R4 without having to cut into the housing?

6.5 inch ? 7 inch ??

For those of you with monitors in place of your factory radio/CD...where did you mount your radio after installing the monitor ?

I'd say it totally depends on the particular screen in question. I squeezed a 7" screen in there but definitely cut the heck out of it to do it. It would be impossible to put a bigger one; the bare 7" panel is already a few mm taller than the opening.

I didn't relocate my Hu at all. Instead I have PC in the rear cubby that does everything. Click on the CarPC link in my sig if you want more information.

I've read over that thread a couple times. Definatley something to aspire to. unfortunately, I do not have the time or the knowledge to install something like that myself.

I hope to buy all the necessary equipment (LCD monitor, DVD player, CD/MP3 headunit)online and have a local audio shop install it all.

I'm not a big fan of the flip out, motorized all in one deals as I can imagine the life on the "motorization" is limited.

I want to do a flush mount monitor in place of the factory HU and then mount the DVD player in the glovebox.

Now it's just a question of where to place the new HU in order to gain access to it while driving. Any suggestions out there??

I hear that they are going to be releasing a new model around May, so you might want to wait for that...
 
Trust me, I've been drooling over that Eclipse for some time. I just can't spend that kind of scratch on a unit.

I'm looking to top out around $900.

figure to be able to pick up the following:

Liliput (or similar ) 6.5" monitor for just under $200 (eBay)
Kenwood DVD player $180 (eBay)
Cd/Mp2 receiver $300 (Best Buy / local audio store)
wires, etc $75
install $150 (local audio store)

Am I forgetting anything? Is it unreasonable to expect these prices for decent equipment??

You could probably make something like that work...I assume that the receiever has inputs to run your DVD player audio? Where will you mount the receiver if the Screen is in the dash. Almost any other suitable mounting location seems like a PITA to control.

Not bashing it, but really curious how this will work. Also, you might want to add some to your install estimate, depending on how much you are doing yourself.
 
Yeah, I would definately run the audio from the DVD player (mounted in the CD changer slot in the glovebox) to the receiver and use the 4R's speaker system for the DVD audio.

As for mounting the receiver, that seems to be the only problem I have yet to address. I'm at a loss. I can't believe Toyota didn't leave enough space in that little flip down door under the A/C controls to install a HU.

What exactly is behind that door anyway? Is it something that can be moved in order to clear space for a HU? It's too low for the LCD monitor to be placed there.

I hope that once I can figure out all the logistics and install specs (locations, etc) I'll mount the DVD player myself (not a big deal) and leave the wires out so that when they take the dash apart for the HU install, it's an easy plug in for them. I've never installed one before but from the looks of the LCD monitors, it appears to be a simple install as well. Mount it and manufacture a surround (if needed) then connect the video out from the DVD player to the video in on the monitor.

So the only real install I would have to pay for would be the HU. And I suppose if I'm going to have to take the dash off for monitor install, I may as well install the HU myself too and save that money. I'm a bit timid to take that dash apart for fear of ending up with a squeeky dashboard down the line, but I guess if I'm going to undertake something like this I'm gonna have to get into it pretty deep.


I wish I could just do one of those carputers like Rando has, but I am clueless about how to build and wire it up. And I sure as hell wouldn't trust the clown at Circuit City Install to figure it all out for me.
 
A couple of thoughts-

Someone cut up their flip-open tray and the insert below it. When you open the tray, you are looking at the head-unit (mounted vertical). Maybe someone remembers what that post was called, but it may work.

As for taking apart the dash...it's not hard and I know that I would feel better doing it myself and knowing it was done right (or at least what I broke in the process) than having someone I don't know try to cover up their mistakes.
 
I would bet that you could find that AVX-2494 for less than 1300 (I think it lists for ~2300). A little above your price range, but a lot less Pain In The Ass. Both installation and use will be easier. Everything in one unit is nice.

I'm still trying to decide between a unit like this or a CarPC. I like to customize, but reliability is worth a lot, too.

eBay.... give yourself some time to buy it. I managed to get the DDX7015 & Kenwood NAV system for $1100 - 3 months old! Keep in mind that I was researching this HU for about 3 months and checking eBay daily, so luckily I found that deal.

You can get the DDX7015 by itself for around $800 refurbished, or about $950-$1100 brand new.

Several control units, a ton of wires, dash supports and other structural members. In short, there's basically no space back there. There's little to none behind the AC controls also. There's quite a bit of space behind/around the HU, between the HU and instrument panel and along the top of the dash area. There's also some (not a ton) of space around the glove box area. The passenger kick panel has a bit of space. None of those areas are going to work too well to mount the HU (unmodified).

The center console box is probably your best bet or some sort of custom dash work. Of course, custom work might cost more than you'd be saving.
 
you guys are probably right, it's best to buy an all in one unit like the Kenwood 7015 or something similar. It could easily be switched with the factory HU and I wouldn't have to worry about having this thing over here, that thing over here, and god knows what inbetween. Everything within an arms length would be a lot more user friendly. And installed a lot easier.

I've seen some nice "used" all-in-ones on eBay in the $800-900 range. Guess its just a matter of waiting until the right deal comes across.

One last question...anyone have an idea of what I could possibly get ($$) for my factory HU? I'm sure there is someone out there who would want it.

I'm thinking about selling my JVC miniDV camcorder, my ESA Mp3 player and a couple pieces of saltwater aquarium gear to raise funds for this purchase. All that and selling off my BestBuy gift cards to a guy at my office for 80 cents on the dollar.
