hey guys, so im wanting to gain a couple inches on my 4runner so i can fit 33 inch tires on my 1988 4runner. am i able to just buy new shocks all around that are a couple inches longer and gain this lift? or do you need the full kits if im able to just add longer shocks, what size should i get? does anyone know the length of stock 1988 toyota 4runner shocks? thanks
longer shocks will not lift your truck it doesn't work like that.
the LEAF springs are what lift your vehicle and with IFS front suspension you will need lots of stuff to lift it.
if you want 33s without cutting your fenders to fit them you will need 2.5 inches if lift. this means new leaf springs and ball joint spacers.
shocks are designed to dampen the travel speed of the suspension getting longer ones does not lift you vehicle it just changes the travel length but your suspension being stock will not travel far because its designed to go only so far.
think about a bike the frame is the solid with out shocks its a stiff ride but with shocks its smooth they do not lift you bike up and make it bigger.
now once you lift the vehicle it is recommended to get shocks that match your lift. so if you lift 2 inches you need to get shocks that are 2 inches longer. this is needed only if you want to do something right.
if your strapped for cash and want lift then you shouldnt lift it. going cheap on something that makes or breaks your vehicle is never a good idea.
save you cash and buy a SAS kit or full 4 inch lift kit. its only like 1,000 to get the full kit.
