Thanks. I have not been letting it sit for hour first. I will try that. I'll also try hooking up the meter probes the way to recommend. I did have three auto parts stores test the battery and all said it was good. I appreciate the tips. Thanks.

If you have the 96 to 98 with the hella fog lights, the wiring was incorrect in the harness and had the cube relay energized all the time. The two red wires in the harness need swapped.

The above is the first thing I discovered in my journey trying to figure out why my 800cca battery is acting half dead all the time.

After checking fuses.

I think i identified the source of battery drain.
There is a problem with the Stop Lights Circuit.
I just don't know what the next step would be?</p>

If stop light circuit I would thoroughly check out the wires in your rear hatch boot. Very good chance you will find your issue there. I suspect breaking or cracking insulation of wires with shorting according.

If you pull the radio fuse does your drain go away? Did you install an aftermarket amplifier?

Mostly the drains are in the door jam boots on just a few circuits like the door locks. Stop lights etc.

I would say its very odd to have a radio cause a battery drain unless it was hooked into the wrong wires or a radio adapter harness was not used.

I had the stereo installed at Best ***** (Buy)...lol. I even took it back there to the installation dept who insisted nothing was wrong with their installation (of course) but its been like this ever since, unless it it just a coincidence.

I did remove the fuse for the stereo and at first it seemed to help, then it just kept draining. If it is not driven for a couple of days, it won't start. Still trying to get to the bottom of this one. My next attempt will probably be to check the alternator fuse? I'm not sure...

I would have them walk you through the install, specifically if they installed an amp - where did they tap into for power?

You can also monitor the battery for parasitic drain and work your way backwards from their work to see if you can isolate the issue.

It's also possible they unintentionally created a short somewhere, so knowing where all they worked would be valuable in your case if this is a "since the radio was installed" issue.

Do you know to use an Amp meter?


If you do, you can put that in series with a battery terminal and see what your current draw is.

Then pull each fuse one at a time and watch for the current to drop.

Could be a few circuits messed up.

As in deep sleep these draw miliamps.
When everything is off. [ I forget the exact amount but it's low]

If an amp was installed, they probably tapped the wrong wire. As you want those completely off when the rig is parked no keys.

Hard to say what it actually is without through testing.

Battery Drain

I've been having similar issues.

I did the test to find what fuse its on and looks like my MPX-B fuse is higher than should be. Not by much, but still higher.

Looking this up, I see it controls a lot of the ancillary items, like door locks and what not.

I've had the issue with the driver side actuator and am replacing that, hoping that may be the issue.

Was wondering if there are any other common items that sit on this fuse that are culprits?
