What Tires to Get?

I need your help! I am looking to get some new tires for my Runner and I can't decide which ones to get. I do some off-road and on-road driving. OK, here are the top contenders:

BFG All-Terrain T/A KO 265/70/17
BFG Mud-Terrain T/A KM 255/75/17
Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac 265/70/17
Goodyear Wrangler MT/R with Kevlar 255/75/17 or 265/70/17

Please I need everyones input! If you had experience with these tires or know anything about them, the feedback would be great.

I had the BFG All-Terrain T/A KO 265/70/17. With my overall experience it was a great tire. Pros: It could cut thru snow packed roads and some icy spots. It was wide enough that i could make sharp turns easily like a car. I put 40K miles and i still had 75% thread left. Also, sold it at half what i paid for so it had a high resale value. Cons: I could hear the tires roar on the freeway. I had a little rubbing on my upper arms when i make u-turns. It covered most of the gap on the wheel wells that i was afraid to go over big road bumps even high driveways. Also, not good when hydroplaning. :bash:

IMHO, The cons are minor so it was a great tire.
 
BFG A/Ts are awesome. You cant go wrong with them... That being said the Nittos are quite a bit cheaper and are a great tire...

I got my 265-70-17 Nittos for $136 each shipped off of discounttiredirect.com The cheapest I could find the BFG a/t's was $200 each shipped.

Also looking at Kumho Road Venture MT KL71
I am just looking for a good over all tire!

Good all over tire is the BFG a/t. Unless youre doing some more serious off roading you do not need a mud tire. Unless you just like the looks of the mud tires, then i would say get the cooper m/ts. mud tires look cool, but lower mpg, are noisy, and dont stop well in the rain. just my .02

How bad was the rubbing issue and what would prevent it? Wheel spacers or lift spacers? I was considering BFG's but I've heard the "square" design can cause them to rub slightly where other tires might not. Any truth to that?

I have the BFG's on the Runner now but they are smaller a 265/65/17 and almost worn down. I think they still perform pretty well and no rubbing issues. I had them in the big snow storm in MD. I am a leaning stronger toward the BFG's, but there is so much out there.

I would go with the Duratracs. They rate better than the BFG A/T in rain and look pretty cool. I know MD had a ton of snow this year for them but I wouldn't worry about which tire performed the best in snow. The M/T are over overkill unless you really do serious off-road. Loud, bad on-road performance and $$$$.
 
You said it yourself, "a good overall tire." That fits the description of an AT tire exactly.

BFG is going to be a stellar choice for both on road driving characteristics and proven tread life. They also go well with the looks of the 4Runner. I've owned several sets of these on different vehicles.

Nittos TGs are biased towards road handling and based on the reviews that I've read - both empirical and anecdotal - they are not as good in the snow as the others.

The Goodyear Duratracs are a newer tire but have seen great reviews thus far. Their goal with designing the tire was for heavier use on 1/2 ton and larger trucks - similar to what the Cooper STs became popular for.

I currently run the Wrangler Authority TA which is a very similar tire to the Duratrac. It is a fantastic tire but it is soft, it has deep lugs and the shoulder lugs produce some wicked road noise. It won't handle spirited driving nearly as well as the BFG or the Nitto. Did I mention it was loud?

The Toyos are a great tire. My brother runs them on his 4Runner limited, but they are expensive, regardless of size. These would be your high dollar choice.

I would reccomend looking at the Cooper STs. Tread wear is great and they are very durable. They also look pretty sharp, too.

And as stated before, unless you're really looking for a mud tire, I'd shy away from both the Goodyear and BFG. Both will be expensive (the Goodyear more so), they won't last as long and your road noise will be wicked. Also, the GY Kevlar is a pretty gnarly tire and for most applications, it is overkill.
 
I just put the 265/70/17 DuraTracs on my truck. I only have 100 miles on them, but so far I'm very pleased. They look great, and although they aren't as quiet as the stock tires, they are pretty quiet on the freeway for how aggressive they are.

I haven't taken them off road or in the snow yet, but all the reviews I read when making my decision were positive.

I like BFG because you can get them anywhere if you have a problem when traveling places. Some of the other tire companies have fewer dealers nationwide. The mud terrain tires on your list will be noisier than an AT tire.

Not bad of a rub. Kinda like rubbing your skin with your mate. lol Wheel spacers would've prevented it but you might get another rub from the front wheel well. Lift spacers also would've prevented it (i think). But i haven't tried the 265/65/17s (if they have 'em) yet.
