What to do after flooding

I'm pretty sure my '15 SR5 4x4 (stock) got very close to or took on water. Should I not start it and have it towed to shop (will I risk more damage by starting it)? I doubt it took on much, but water was hugging the rockers when I left it.

Sorry to hear you're in this situation. It all depends on how high the water got. You will have to try and find some sort of high water line or evidence when you return to it. If it got no higher than the rockers then I'm sure it will start ok, but I would not drive it very far without doing some 'repairs'. I would recommend draining and replacing all the fluids. Diffs, transfer case, transmission, engine oil and brake fluid. If the engine got completely submerged, then obviously do not attempt start it until you're sure all the water is out, especially from the cylinders. The easiest way to do that is by removing the spark plugs and turning the engine over so any water in there gets pumped out. Unfortunately, I suspect damage to electrical equipment will be a problem too. Good luck.

If you are not sure, flat bed tow to the mechanic would be the best option. Depending on the actual water level contact your insurance company. Full vehicle replacement due to flood might be your best option. Water corrosion down the road and/or mold could become a constant nightmare.

Thanks guys. When I got to the 4r, the water line was on the rocker and the bottom of the bumper. I drove it out. I'll get it checked, and had already reported to insurance, but it seems fine. Will likely have it gone over with a fine tooth comb and change fluids (just did an oil change about 10 days ago). Definitely no water inside, the $150 spent on plastic ramps at northern tool was well spent, apparently.
