What to do if youre getting low MPG

Ive recently discovered my 04 was getting 7-8mpg and i just got it about a month ago and didnt know when any maintenance was done on it. But Last night I put in a new air filter, the last one was super gray and today new spark plugs and the old ones were pretty black. I dont know what I get now but before It would take an 8th of a tank to drive about 16 miles. I drove only about 18-20 and it still hasn't moved from the first line on the gas gauge. My oil was good but I suggest this is your mpg is very low like mine was. I figured even though it was a v8 there should be no reason for mileage that low. Im probably in the high teens now.:cowboy:

Black plugs could indicate a very rich condition and if your air filter was plugged up it could cause an over rich condition. Drive til you're almost empty then recalculate your fuel consumption.

I know this is an older thread, but also don't forget you could clean the throttle body and MAF. I also replaced the distributor caps and fuel filter. All of this is fairly easy and cheap to do and really help.
