what to expect from cleaned MAF and O2 sensors?

1998 4Runner 4x4 LTD 3.4L V6 - approx 185k miles.

Knock on wood - it's actually running pretty good these days. It's a little sluggish (for lack of a better description) every now and then, but all in all it's okay. It's reliable, that's for sure.

I just recently had the plugs and wires replaced and I started running the high mileage oil about 3k miles ago.

Anyway, I'm always looking to improve something (especially if it's cheap) so I'm looking to clean the MAF and the O2 sensors next.

My question is, what am I really gonna get out of this? Do you think I'll notice any improvement in the performance at all?

I can tell you this, neither one of them (MAF or O2) has been touched since this car came off the lot.

I guess my concern here is...if it aint broke, don't fix it. I don't want to screw something up (especially with the MAF) end up costing myselt a load of cash to get a new one.

Please advise.

Thanks for the post JPMORGN!

I have about the same issues with my '97 3.4L with 175k, especially sluggish acceleration in 2nd and 3rd gears when cranking up the RPM. Have cleaned the MAF sensor, and just installed a TrueFlow filter. Too early to tell the results.

Looking forward to the forum's insight.

How is your mileage? I know the MAF and O2 have to do with mileage. I think I need to clean mine, I'm getting horrible mileage.

It'll help with your throttle body response because the sensor for the intake will signal to the computer which you'll get better flow into your engine.

Thanks for the replies.

My mileage is fine - about the range I always got (18-22).

The last time I really checked it I got about 315 miles on a tank and I had a lot of non-highway travelling.

I'm gonna go ahead and clean them next weekend and see what happens.

That's way better than most from what I've seen on yotatech. You should be pretty content w/ that gas mileage.

I cleaned my MAF sensor, throttle body, new 02 sensor, new fuel filter, new tps sensor...

Who knows... once you clean it... might end up getting my mileage... Try 13 mpg less than 200 miles per fill up....

I thought I had alot of miles on mine with 160k on my 98 ltd. And how in the world did u get 315 on a single tank? I just replaced plugs and air filter and got 300 and that was alot of highway and running almost empty.

brushguards weigh us down which gives us less mileage

im hitting the 250 miles per tank so im only gettin about 14.5 mpg or so avg

i havent replaced my o2 sensors yet but hope to soon.

Newer O2 sensor should last between 60 k to 90 k miles. Many do not however. I have never heard of anyone cleaning the oxygen sensor. Sometimes it is difficult to get at and is always stubborn to remove. If I were going to go that far then I would simply replace the upstream ones.

I clean my MAF every 30 k miles with electrical cleaner (aerosol can)

Both have an effect on air-to-fuel ratio. The MAF having more of an effect. The O2 sensor is fine tuning the air-to-fuel ratio. The O2 sensor is not used under acceleration, deceleration, or when the engine is not up to operating temp.

4wheeln98 -

I don't understand your amazement by my mileage.

On an earlier thread (most miles on 1 tank of gas) - that you yourself posted your mileage on...in your exact words 'I got about 300 miles before I got scared...'

In fact, one person on that thread claims to have gotten 400 miles on 1 tank and another claims to regularly get between 320 and 380. Several people claimed to be in the 300s.

FYI.

Yeah, having a brush guard and a big sound system dont help out too much. And buddy i tried to get as much out of my tank as possible, just that the same exact truck can do different on gas (depending on accessories) and that was only once.

I have to call b.s. on 380 or 400 miles on a tank. Assuming you fill up at around 16 gallons like most, that would be over 23 mpg. I don't even think Toyota touted that when the truck was new.

No, it's a fact. I can get at least 350 miles before I fill-up and I still have 3-4 gallons left. So with those 4 gallons left, 400 miles is easy...but pushing it and not recommended to go down that low on fuel. But anyway, i have done it many times in the past. Key is to make sure your tank if full. A lot of times, the gas pump stops prematurely (some say due to the angle of our fill spout). I always pump $3.00 more to when it stops and it is not overfilling. Have been doing it since truck was new ( i know a lot of people will say this is bad)..but knock on wood...no problems yet.

So with a FULL TANK of fuel, I experience approx. 110 miles between the full and 3/4 mark, then when @ the 1/2 mark, my resetablel odometer mileage reads 200-210, then at 1/4 mark, 300-315 (I fill up here)...but if I kept going, there is clearly a good 100 miles left till empty.
