What to look for in a supercharger

i didnt say(nor did he) that it will not add power. it does add power. but the trd sc is so "detuned" from its potential the way the factory/dealer sells it that they really are not worth the cost, they dont make that much more power... sure you can do the 2.2 and other upgrades with it, but you have to add more fuel. its a pretty simple equation. the stock auto trannys were never designed to handle the added power potential of the SC, thats why its so "detuned". toyota from day one would never honor the warranty for damage to the auto trans to either, the taco or the 4runner if they found out you had put the 2.2 on the truck. in stock form the trd sc does not make that much more power, i think its only like 40hp sure its capable of making over 100 more hp put your fuel system will never keep up with it.

160 per year plus the initial cost of $3k, and the rebuild every 80-100k... if you can afford it then great, do the up grade. but in stock form the trd sc isnt gonna give you a big bang for the buck... most people are not as pleased with is as they thought they would be, hence the 2.2 pulleys ect....

im not trying to say the SC is junk and dont waste your time, nor was my father in law, just simply their are pros and cons, and if it works for you then great, but i think too many people just think "oh added hp yeah..." and forget about the other side of the coin and then are kinda remorseful. im not saying some arent happy with it, im just trying to be objective and give a friend a fair assessment and clear view of everything. again, if i got a killer deal on one(like under $500 id jump on it in a heart beat. but right now with not a lot of work and a family to feed and look after, and increasing fuel costs, it makes me less and less inclined to sc my runner. (id rather dump that $$$ into a td conversion and get better power, mileage and have more options with type of fuels...

You should really do your homework before you start trashing one of the very few things that actually gives our motors a significant power increase.

I spent 230 on the rebuild but thats only cause I upgraded to ceramic ball bearings from rolling performance and got high perf seals and coupler. All done by my self and a press. the SC is like new quiter than when I got it. Also changed the oil it no longer sounds like a diesel under my hood with the SC rattleing in there. Then added the 2.2 urd and its evem better

im not trashing on them, and you are trying to tell me that your knowledge of the sc and the 3.4 is greater than a master tech who as worked for toyota for over 23 years? please now you just plan sound silly man. i respect your opinion and everyone else on here who is running the sc. but they dont give 75 hp to the wheels, they give maybe 75 to the crank and thats under the most ideal conditions. the wheels see only about 40 more hp.

With no upgrades, yeah. But add URD stuff and you get double that.

Also, SC Engines see better mileage than NA. So offsets fuel costs too.

BTW, the A340 transmission is also used behind several other Toyota engines... most notably the 2JZ-GTE found in the '93-'97 Toyota Supra Twin Turbo. That car makes 320hp stock. The only difference in the two applications is the valve body.

RE the upgrades to 2.2's... have you ever owned a boosted vehicle? If so, you should know that boost is simply addictive. Once you have it, you always want "just one more PSI".

nope the trans are different, they have the same bolt pattern but they are different, the case is different, the internals are different (similar, but they can not be switched), the tq converter is different... they are a different transmission.

no i have not, but ive worked around and on many cars and trucks the are both sc'd or turbo'd... and ive driven them too as well as built some. i know what the saddiction is like lol. thats the main reason im not jumping to get one. i can do other better things with that money at this point.

that car was built in my garage by my cousin while i was in iraq, but i have helped him on it some. most of it is over my head with all the wiring ect. but the car makes a little more than stock power figures and except for a sc that blew up on us and a clutch that disintegrated they car works just fine...

I have a hard time believing someone that says the TRD S/C is only good for making a cool noise. No one ever said that the 75hp gain was at the wheels. Its at the crank and its still a 41% increase in HP which is a TON.

Here are the applications for the A340 trans

A340E (30-40LE)
Applications:
1987-1992 Cressida (30-40LE)
1986-1998 Toyota Supra non-turbo
1987-1998 Toyota Supra turbo
1990-2000 Toyota Chaser/Mark II/Cresta 2.5 (1JZ-GE)
1995-2004 Toyota Tacoma 2.7L I4, 3.4L V6
1993-1995 T100 3.0L V6
1993-1997 Previa 2.4L w/supercharger
1991-1997 Aristo 3.0L I6 Turbo
1992-2000 Lexus SC 300 3.0L I6
1990-1995 Crown Majesta 3.0L I6
1994-2000 Toyota Soarer 3.0L I6 (2JZ-GE)
1995-1997 Lexus LS 400 4.0L V8
1989-2002 4Runner (4x2)
2001-2004 Sequoia (4x2)
2000-2004 Tundra (4x4)
2005-2007 TOYOTA COMMUTER 2.5L DIESEL
Ratios 1st:2.804 , 2nd:1.531 , 3rd:1 , 4th:0.705, Reverse: 2.393

The 3rd gen 4wd uses a A340F. The only difference is that it is a 4wd trans.

They might have one more clutch pack, and the stall speed on the converter may vary from application to application, but they are essentially the same.

I don't want to split hairs w/you on it, but the point is, the transmission in the 4Runners will hold up to the power just fine. For someone who plans on horsebeating it all day, or just wants to know that they can, there's the valve body upgrade.

***Momentary derail alert***

If any of you guys knows...How does the power on a non-2.2'd SC on a 3.4L V6 compare to a N/A 4.0L V6? (I do realize this is not an apples-to-apples comparison, since they're not identical vehicles.) I ask because I like the power my wife's 03 has MUCH more than my 3.4, and if I could just get my 1998 to that level, I think it would be very nice. I'm one of those who could possibly do the SC at first, then go back and do the upgrades down the road (when funds allowed better).

My apologies for the derail...but I have often wondered this.

My buddy and I have done a few pulls for fun... He drives an 04 4runner with 265 70 17 all terrains... Stock otherwise.

Only time I lost to him was from like 40-60 on the highway... Now with the 2.2 it's not even fun anymore.

I did a 0-50ish with an 04 V8 that is similarly built and we were about even. That was with a stock pulley.

Thanks for the quick replies guys! That's pretty incredible that my 3.4 could be that. Hmmm...I would probably just ride around all day with a smile on my face! Might not even mind rebuilding the engine after 3k BOOSTED miles! Haha!

BOY are the wheels turning in my head now.

Damn it Ryan ! I saw the ad on CL too so I know EXACTLY what S/C you are looking at. But I don't have the cash for it

I was really tempted to buy it but it was either have the S/C or be starving for two weeks and I was pretty hungry when I was about to pull the trigger. It seemed like a pretty good deal if in fact it had less than 75k on it. It's also hard to tell how the original owner took care of it. Hell it could have been from a 16 year old boy with a S/C taco for his first car. I know how I drove when I was 16 and I'm glad my first car was given away and not sold, being that i use to do neutral drops and blew the transmission housing.
