I am done with SUVs for a long while. With gas prices rocketing, i am already suffering enough with my G-wagen...it is now officially my house sitter. 
My Sienna will be the main mode of transportation for the family. I may upgrade the Corolla when it hits 100K miles with maybe a hybrid or diesel (whichever is better at the time).

The only other SUVs that appeal to me are the Land Rover LR3 and Range Rover (including the Sport), but I can't see myself buying something as unreliable as a Land Rover.
I also really like the new Chevy Tahoe.
I'm curious to see what Toyota is going to do with the next generation 4Runner, but at the rate I'm going (less than 7,000 miles per year) my 4Runner will last through the 5th generation and probably into the 6th generation as well.

Hard to say, but I'll be parting with my 4Runner by mid-January -- since my (closed end) lease is expiring and I don't plan to buy it out.
I love the 4Runner, but it really is "too much" vehicle for me right now. I don't go off road and generally only need that size of vehicle when hauling more than two other people around. The 4.0L 4Runner is not exactly a gas hog, but cannot be lumped in with economy cars, either.
My g/f has an '02 Highlander with 108k on it, and we plan to keep it for awhile. It has a 3.0L V6 and is more economical than the 4Runner. She is, however, smitten with the new RAV4 and would want one with a four-banger. The new Honda CR-V is nice too.
I have a paid-for 2002 Sentra that will be with me for another 88,000 miles - and I'll probably give it to my son when he starts driving in six years.

Well I have an SUV because we need and use it's capabilities. Although the 4Runner is an very good vehicle and one of the most reliable manufactured, I never understood why someone who does not need or use it would sacrifice comfort, handling,and gas mileage if it is only used to transport 1, 2, 3, or 4 people.
If traction in inclement weather is a concern, there are many other smaller crossovers (e.g. RAV4) or even 4WD wagons and cars that would suffice (e.g. Subarun, Audi). With the traction and stability control systems on most modern vehicles these days, put on a god set of tires and most people are good to go - depending on where they live.
If Toyota diminshes the capabilities of the 4Runner in the next generation, than I will buy one of the last 08s (or 09s - whenever they change) - either Sport or Limited edition. While the current 4.7 L V8 is a great engine, i would be happy with a V6 if it offered enough of a mpg difference. I have no need for a bigger engine than the 4.7, especially if there is a hit in gas mileage.
If my life style changes such that a crossover would serve our purpose I would consider the RAV4, Highlander, Pilot, or Acura MDX.
If the 4Runner did not exist than I would probably be driving a Nissan Xterra Off-Road model.

I think the Toyota's, Honda's, and Miata's I've owned or own over the many years have been great vehicles but I won't buy another Japanese car again if Japan does not change its whaling practices.
When I decide to get rid of what I presently own, it will probably be replaced by one from an American company even though I believe most of the parts of that vehicle will probably not be made in America and not be as good as one made in Japan. I just can't reconcile buying another vehicle from a Japan, that condones so much cruelty, with my conscience.

Another 4Runner depending on which direction Toyota takes the next generation or one after next. I chose the 4Runner because I preferred a body on frame SUV and if I wanted to venture off-road I had the capability to do it.
If I need towing capability, Tundra CrewMax.
If off-road capabilities are not needed, it'll be an Audi Q7. Mazda CX-9 and Highlander are worthy considerations as well.
The majority of miles I rack up are during winter and at my current rate, more likely than not, my next vehicle will be a car.

I've got about 14 months on my lease left. ( 1st and last time I'll ever lease) I will be about 20k miles under with an extended warr. to 80k miles. I hate to turn it in , but most likely will not sure. Smart thing to do would be to keep it , buy it out and / or trade it .
Next time and 1st time in my life I'll by used , maybe a year or 2 old .
I love the conv. of the SUV's and have no need for a pick up truck since I have 2 good size trailers already. I like truck based SUV's so selections are limited I will probably go back to a Tahoe/Yukon. I want something bigger , don't really care about fuel or getting a Hybrid ( since I never have seen a purpose in a Hybrid and why people by them).
I'm sure the 4R will become less of a truck for the 5th gen. or be rounded looking like the new Highlander ect.... I also am not overly impressed with Toyota , but do love my 4R.

We likewise use the 4Runner to its fullest extent, but it now often sits in the garage if there is an option to use the car (1999 Altima manual 4 cyl.)!

So I would consider another 4Runner. If they go diesel, that may be a draw (but with more & more diesels, the fuel price will likely climb).
I thought I would never say this, but it's also hard to ignore the many good reports regarding GM's SUVs these days. The quality and customer focus is getting better & better, and they're pretty innovative these days (as they have to be).

I always buy what I want , not really what is practical , but still suits my needs . If I'm driving by my self most of the time and a Tahoe or 4R is what I like then thats what I'll drive.
Rumor has it the next Gen. will be made in USA so that gives me enough reason to go back to GM Tahoe. If the 5th gen. looks kick a$$ tough / off road capable then I may consider it . By the way and style the other new Toyota models are going I doubt it will be nothing short of a vehicle to carry more kids and groceries.

I am confused by your remarks...you are critical of next gen 4runner's off-road prowess, YET your golden alternative is no more capable than my Sienna! Have you seen a Tahoe and it's "roadkill-scraper" in the front air dam?? Have you not notice that despite Camry's issues, it is still better in quality and reliability than all domestics despite being made in US?? Although i am critical of Toyota at times, they still have some ways to go down before reaching the reliability level of domestics.
