What would it take to put you in a Jeep?

When I read the post about the price tag, I immediately thought of what it would take to get me back into a Dodge. I owned a Dakota and it was horrendously expensive with all the crap that broke on it, but then I found this:

....and realized that if I had $170k lying around, buying that would not keep me up at night. Neither would buying a Brute, come to think of it.

I keep wanting to get a used Jeep to run with the top down in the summer and fall months, but those I've ridden in have been drafty hell when the snow starts falling.

It'd have to be a third vehicle, and therefore cheap. Used is the only way to go for me.

I bought a convertible 2-seater for this exact reason a little more than a year ago - and I've found I drive it more than the 4runner. Spent about $6K on the car and have added a hard top and tires/wheels since.

I always find the Jeep hate by Toyota folk amusing.

For the most part Wranglers are reliable, cheap, easy to work on, have a proper solid front axle, many have interiors that can be hosed out, and there's nearly an infinite amount of aftermarket parts available to truly make yours unique and off-road worthy at a fraction what it would cost to make a Toyota that way.

Did I mention you can take the top and doors off and have a true open 4x4 that gives a driving experience like nothing else.

Jeep owners can be posers, and there are some truly ghastly custom Jeeps out there, but I bet most 4Runner owners would kill to have a custom shop like AEV cranking out turnkey, high end, warrantied, Expedition trucks and custom builds.

Toyota is out at SEMA whoring out some dreadful Oakley pimpmobile 4Runner and adding more and more plastic while the Wrangler remains a classic.

I was always a Jeep and still am. My mom owned one growing up and that thing was bullet proof. I would get calls on the snow storm days in Maine to come pull people out. It even had a tree fall on it! I will own my 4Runner for a long time, but when its time for a new vehicle I will be considering Jeeps again like I was when I bought the 4Runner. I am hoping they drop a diesel in the Wrangler. That would make for an easy switch.

What would it take? ...back up to 2008 and stop the government bailout and decision that Chrysler was "too big to fail"... let Chrysler go through a full blown bankruptcy like any private company poorly run would have to go through. it would've been painful no doubt but it would've forced them to make some tougher decisions and if they survived, you'd probably have higher quality Chrysler products today.

Would've been nice to see Jeep be bought by the employees, sort of like Harley did years ago. Chrysler only bought AMC to get the Jeep brand. I think they've been ok stewards of it. On par with AMC, but not as good as Kaiser or Willys.

For me to buy one, it would have to be an insanely good deal, and likely not a Daimler product. I would purchase a CJ8, but probably nothing newer than that.

When I was about to get out of the Marines, I decided to treat myself to a brand new car. I walked into a Jeep dealership and purchased a brand new 94 Wrangler. I custom ordered the Jeep to my specs. It had a 4 cyl , soft top with factory A/C, 5 speed trans, and a limited slip rear.

I drove that Jeep from 1994 all the way up to 2012 when I finally decided to upgrade to a newer vehicle and I bought my 02 4 Runner.

I have to say that owning a Jeep was a BLAST. I drove with the top off pretty much all the time from May to October. I removed the factory carpet and Rhino lined the floors. If it rained I could care less. I put 140,000 trouble free miles on that Jeep and while I was never a big off roader, it NEVER once got stuck in the snow or anywhere I used it.

When my wife and I first started dating she loved cruising in the Jeep with the top down. Her parents own a small cottage in Cape May NJ and we took the Jeep down to the Jersey shore many times and it was a blast. I also own a vacation home in the Pocono Mts of PA and it was awesome to be up there in the summer with the top off. Many times I used 4WD to drop my 14' aluminum fishing boat into different lakes and NEVER once did I have a problem with the Jeep. We spent many weekend winters up in the Pocono's during ski season and even 2-3' of snow wouldn't stop that Jeep.

When we got married and had kids, the kids LOVED riding in the Jeep with the top down. Many times they requested that we take the Jeep when we were going out.

Eventually as I got older, a 94 Wrangler just wasn't the right vehicle for me as a daily driver. They are bouncy and don't have any creature comforts. So I went out and bought a really nice 02 4 Runner Sport to use as a daily driver. I finally decided to sell my beloved Jeep after owning it for 18 years. I would own another one in a second. Not much beats a soft top Jeep Wrangler for "fun factor".
