Alright, so for those of you who don't know...I've just finished getting my T-belt and water pump done on the 4Runner. A friend of mine offered to do it for me for free several months ago, and finally I decided to buy the parts and have him do it for me. I went out and picked up his tools (huge Mechanics tool chest) and he came over on 2 separate days. The first day he came with his own car, and the second time I picked him up, and he spent the night (we had a Halloween Party, and we fed him and gave him some booze). He then got a ride home with a friend who was in the area.

After the job was done, I decided to give him $30.00 for gas and whatever else (more than it cost for him to be here). He left happy, (I think anyway), but now I'm thinking I should have probably given him a few bucks more???

What do you guys think?? The T-belt / Water pump job costs around $900.00 at my local Stealership, and although I gave him a hand, he did most of the work. I was thinking of tossing a few extra dollars and make it an even $100.00 or even $200.00???

The guy is a student, taking his Mechanics course in College, and could probably use the cash.....

What would you do??

I'd throw some cash his way. Whatever you are comfortable with doing. Might make him more inclined to help you in the future, should you need it.
 
Just return the favor and be a good friend.

He offered to do it for free for a friend and you donated gas money, food, and booze. Sounds fair to me. not being trying to sound cheap, but its just a case of friends doing favors for each other.
 
I'd definitely give him something more. If it's more cash, that's fine. It could also be some sort of cool gift or take him out to a nice steak dinner. Just show him that you don't take his work and kindness for granted and that you greatly appreciate it.
 
My boss did me a big favor in helping me weld on my sliders and do the frame endcap mod for the ARB.

When all was said and done I went down to the best butcher/meat market in town and picked him up $100 worth of some PRIME hand cut steaks... ribeyes, t-bones, etc.

He's loves to grill, and loves steak, so it was perfect.

Me and my 4runner buddies do this all the time. We help each other out with nothing but maybe a few beers and a free dinner involved. I agree that it's a big job but if he offered to do it for free and you still gave him food, beer, a place to stay, and some extra money for gas then I think its pretty close to even. Just make sure he knows that if he needs any help you'd return the favor :thumb3:
 
if its a good friend and he offered then i would at least offer some more cash and if he really is a good friend he'll say don't worry about it.
 
My Mechanic, regular shop no "friend" so to speak just my usual mechanic I take my cars to is doing mine for $250 labor cost.
That is water pump, TB, all other belts, pulleys, seals, thermostat etc.

I think that is pretty much the going rate, the stealership rate is ridiculous.

I bought all the parts for $288.

That sounds like a good price...the dealership here in town, regular does jobs and sells parts for crazy money....and usually couple that with a tube of lubricant and a box of rubbers!
 
$100 or gift cards, in which the latter I usually ask for from my rich friends, if he goes to a big box home store or the like.
 
A friend of mine helped me do a few things, suspension swap, exhaust, about a days worth of work. I bought him a few small tools that I noticed he could use, and also I bought him a 100 gift certificate to a tuner so he could pick up something he had been wanting for months.

We help each other out, but since it was a larger job, I thought it was appropriate to do a bit more. Its more that I didnt help him to that level, or would in the near future, that I felt I needed to do a bit more than buying lunch.

If he needs it, I'd say $150.00 even (that would be a extra 70.00 or so on what you already gave him)
He offered to do it for $0.00, hey hes did it and he's a student, I think he needs it. If you go thru with it, hopefully he doesn't spend it all on booze and have liver failure ;)
 
yeah id toss him a bone or two, maybe cash, or yeah idk, is there anything you know he needs? i agree with a lot of the guys on here about him offering to do it for free and what not, but the fact that he is a student, probably means he is pretty poor. so in this case im sure he could use a hand/extra cash(not to be confused with a hand-out). but ultimatly its up to you man. can you afford to give him some more $$ or help him out some more? do what you feel is right.
i have intalled some lifts for guys and help other put on bumpers ect, i dont ever expect any $$$ unless i say i will only do it if i get paid. but when someone buys me lunch and pays for my gas its always nice. and the deal is even sweeter when they give me some more $$ to go with it. but again do what you feel is best/right
 
What's up Fight..... you're a good soul. Your heart lead you to ask and will lead you to make a decision. IMO if you're asking, you see your extra cash would help him out, just like he did in kind for you. Nothing wrong with that, whatever the amount you'll both benefit from the gesture to a good friend.

Thanks guys for all the replies....long story short, I tossed my buddy another $60.00 to help him pay for some parts he needs to buy for his Jetta. He didn't want to take it at first, but after I explained that I wanted to show my appreciation for the work he did, he was willing to take it.

He must have been happy with the gift/money, because he then suggested we make a date to get to work on the Panhard Drop Bracket for my lift!

You did the right thing man, gotta take care of your friends who are nice enough to lend a helping hand when you need them :)
