What Would You Do?

So I've been given the opportunity to buy a supercharger for a good price. Unfortunately money isn't growing on trees at my house, so I would have to compromise a bit. I'm just looking for some opinions on whether you guys thinks it's worth it. In order to buy the supercharger I would have to sell the following items:

Front Tube Bumper
Retrofitted Headlights
33" Tires
Spare Parts (Need to sell these anyways)
BudBuilt Skid
UltraGauge
and some cash on my end.

I would have a s/c, but is giving up those items worth it? I'm thinking no, but who knows.

I don't think it's worth it at all! I'd sell the spare parts and see how much cash you have then. Just weigh the pros and cons. Like I always say to my friends who have nicer cars than I do that go faster than mine: "Your car goes fast, but mine goes anywhere (even though it's a 2wd)."

As much as I want a supercharger, I think I would hold off. That's a lot of stuff that you would have to give up. S/Cs pop up enough that you will likely find another when the money is right. Just my $.02.

Don't do it. Even with a supercharger, you're still not going to race it. I'd spend some money on new gears and get some of the original power/torque back. I almost pulled the trigger on one, but decided on bumper and other upgrades instead. Those things will be worth itin the long run.

I am having a similar dilemma. The S/Ced runner that's up for sale in the classifieds is within my budget, and I totally qualify for the loan, but funds are going to be really tight for next few months, so it would mean eating ramen noodles and hot dogs for the next 3 months in order to make the payment. My income will be increasing substantially in about 3 months, which will make it more than affordable at that time, but right now the funds are just not available! What to do, what to do? Ramen and hotdogs for a month, or hold out and hope it hasn't sold by the time I am truly ready to purchase another Runner.

Sell what you don't need, and just put the cash towards something more useful.

You have to remember that sure the SC is not a bad price, but all the other components to get it to run correctly and reliably will add to the cost a lot.

I agree with Miller also. Put that money towards gears over the SC. It will be more useful for you in the long run.

Yeah the parts will only account for $250 or so. I'm heavily leaning towards keeping the stuff.

I know what you mean and unfortunately 4 S/C's have "popped" up right when I have no money. :frusty:

My idea for a s/c isn't to go fast, but to keep up and help with hills. I don't care to reach 300hp or anything, just to keep my speed on hills and especially at elevation. I've been thinking a lot about gears, but even so it's over a grand.

Of the people that said to pass, how many of you have owned and/or driven a SC'd 4runner? Its is definitely one of my favorite mods so far.

It is a 1st gen with around 30k on it.

The responses I've gotten are what I expected from non sc'd people. I had a sc tacoma years ago and it makes a world of difference. Of course it's not a race car, but it's nice to have. I was talking with Jlee and jberry813 from TW and they said hands down they would have gotten a s/c first before anything else if they did it all over again. That is saying a lot coming from both those guys and their builds, but they also have the finances to follow up with the other stuff soon after. Plus the s/c is used every time you get in the car, but skids, bumpers and lights are used seldom. The only thing is it would cost probably 2-3x as much to get the same parts I would give up if I bought them again.

Trust me I would much rather go turbo than the TRD SC, but being in CA the SC would be a lot less hassle so if a good deal popped up I would have to seriously consider it.

Excellent points. $1k isn't bad for a 1st gen with 30k but there are still better deals to be had on them. I'll keep an eye out for you.

There's also a 1stgen with 40 k in St Louis available. I had to $1 k shipped...it on CL if anyone is interested.

That was my logic right there lol it's not like it's a once in a lifetime opportunity to get a supercharger. I'd say save up for one for the future, that way you don't have to get rid of the sweet projector retrofit you just put money and time into, and the 33's that I'm STILL waiting to see get on your truck UGH!!

There is no comparing a geared 4runner with a S/Ced 4runner. I have driven both on 35's and automatics. I would take my S/Ced with 4.10s over one with 4.88s anyday.

Kep your currant envestments! Start a S/C savings fund and next time a good dxeal pops up jump on it and never look back! Also plan on the fuel upgrades!

Yeah it would take me a while to buy back all those parts and I wouldn't be able to wheel as much this summer if I sold everything.

I'm working on it. I need to find a 4th tire and I'm good to go, but I'm also trying to decide what I want to do with my wheel situation. Might as well switch it up, but I'm not sure what I want. That also depends on if I get a good deal for a 4th tire.

Good to know and I have a hard time saving as I find deals a lot. Might be getting a set of manual hubs, spindles and cv's for $250 if I can talk the guy into it and scrounge up the money. Still debating that one, but I can sell my stock cv's for some $ back.
