I would want a 3JZ lol. Same displacement as the old 2JZ but with an aluminum block and a 48V hybrid system like Mercedes is doing.
I won't be greedy but 350hp/380-400tq (flywheel) would be sweet. I could see them doing that in the Tacoma and Tundra as well, maybe a hi-po version in the Tundra.

I am used to being disappointed by the recent 4Runner (can't even think about buying one), the Tundra (returned the one I did buy this year), the Sequoia (damn, that looks like it is from 2002), and the Tacoma (stupidly underpowered), every single year. I could not be more disappointed in any changes, so it may be okay.

Well that's ominous.
Don't expect a new V6, plus you're in for a very, very long wait and the days of 4Runner = 100% Nippon are over. If any of that bothers any of you, buy one within the next few years. The setbacks likely mean, don't expect a new model soon either.
I think they've already sorted out the fullsizers' powertrain choices, so next Sequoia isn't running late as much (understatement I know, but...). Midsize TNGA-F stuff, is just so disappointing because of new timing.

I hope to drive mine for another 15-20 years so I don't care too much. That said, there is always a chance it gets totaled, etc.
The 5th gen is close to perfect for me as is. The suspension is easily addressed via aftermarket parts as is protection. The rest is minor gripes.
To get a 6th gen if something happens to mine, I will want pretty much the same vehicle but with 35" tires and an engine that produces equivalent or better power; I don't really care how. A hybrid would be great though generally I don't like hybrids (I would rather have full EV or what I have now but I can live with a hybrid from Toyota).
Otherwise, I will not really need as big of a cabin in about 4 years so I could just get a high-end Bronco, assuming it is dependable on trail. Going the other way, I could get a Tesla if they make a mid-size Cybertruck and a ZR2 Bison could be considered (have not looked into their dependability).
Again, I would much rather have mine

Please NO to the Tacoma redesign with the huge grill....just not a fan of grills that look like a giant bass fish.

Carmaker1, can you please send me a PM with the details? I've had the 2023 6th gen 4runner on the top of my new list for over a year. I finally decided to join the forum to try to get some more information.
I'm not sure why any news like delays or changes in powertrains are not more widely discussed? I'm a member of several car forums and it always seems like when everyone puts their piece of the puzzle forward the community benefits by figuring out more information.

Swinging rear door rather than a lift gate.
Factory options for taller axle ratios.
Fix the body mount so they don't have to be cut.
Full length roof rack so we have mounting bolts up front.
Reroute the power steering lines to make more room in front of the radiator.

I want BOF, SRA, and roughly the same size as the 5th gen. Keep the roll down rear glass. Yokoten the weight reduction strategies used on the LC300 frame and body.
For drivetrain, the T24A with plug-in hybrid capability would be ideal. Bump power capability to ~350hp and give me 40mi EV only range so I can commute on electric and still adventure on the weekends.
