I never understood the appeal of RV's that size. It can't be very enjoyable to drive around, and all you can stay at are campgrounds with crowds of people. :noidea: On a side note, very nice looking set up you have going there.

Not true, in some ways. I have a 36' National Dolphin, and we regularly dry camp (no electrical or water hookups) at the Dunes in SoCal, or in the forests of northern AZ. Sure, you're limited by the amount of water and fuel you can carry, and by the roads you can drive on, but in no way am I limited to RV parks. As far as driving them goes, you really do get used to the size. I don't find it any more stressful as driving any large vehicle.
As with any pursuit, there's limitations and at times I look at that thing in the back yard and think about what else I could be doing with $50K, but life is short......

You must be related to my wife! Can't get her to camp out for the life of me. I guess she is spoiled with too many things like hot showers and a Keurig.
She would go for the RV, but then I told she would have to drive that tank around, because I wasn't going to.........that idea got shot down.
I much prefer your way Swede71, but it's not up to some of us, unless we like being alone.
Come to think of it, that might not be so bad!!

Camp trailer vs. massive RV
On our last camping trip I finally convinced my wife that a sun shower is not so bad after all and beats not getting a shower. I take a sun shower on every trip, solo or with her, and can get that clean, fresh feeling even while camping in a tent. My lovely wife is getting to the point where she's learned to rough it in comfort and go with me so she doesn't miss the adventure.
I like the cargo trailer but you're still camping in a canvas tent. I wonder how well those RTT do in desert winds? Yea, I wouldn't want the big RV even if it were given to me. We're seriously considering a tear drop trailer for ease of camp set up and comfort in windy conditions.

My parents bought one for tailgating. Mostly LSU home games, but they take it on the road for big games like Bama or games where they have a lot of friends/family, like Texas A&M. It's really nice to go to a game and not have to worry about fighting post-game traffic too.
They don't do much else with it though. I doubt their RV has made it more than 500 miles from home.
I don't mind the camping part. I just don't like the 24hrs worth of driving to get there. For the money that those rigs pictured would cost to "camp," I could buy alot of flights and rental vehicles and save a pile of time. Lol

I have a teardrop trailer - custom built to match the 4runner wheel pattern and widht, 6 foot inside height - so I can stand up and outdoor rear kitchen. It works great for what I do, but I don't always use it. Sometimes I just use a regular dome tent. Camper is great for pulling off the road anywhere and just jumping in. It's great to have a nice bed, hard sides, and a kitchen setup with a sink, Dometic fridge, propane cook top, and a dual battery/solar setup to power it. It's basically all the stuff you'd setup for delux tent camping/overland travel, but in a trailer with a built in sleeping area with no setup time. Some places we camp frequently don't allow tents or tent campers because of the bears. So that was a big deciding factor as well. And just the convenience factor. Hitch up and go with all your camping gear ready to roll. No hours of packing/unpacking. For folks who do frequent weekend camping trips - it's great. The shorter the stay - the more convenient the camper is because of how much time it saves in setup/tear down compared to a tent.
There certainly are better camping setups if you were spending months at a time or doing it full time. A 4runner would not be my first choice. I'd be custom building a Tundra or F250 camper or some sort of van.
I could also see having a large RV, but it's not really my style. Not that it wouldn't be a fine way to see the USA - but it doesn't make sense to me financially. When you consider the depreciation and fuel costs, it's cheaper to buy a sports car and stay in hotels if you want the road trip. Unless you live in it full time.
For me - the ultimate adventure-mobile looks like this:

Depends on where and how I am camping, I mostly like getting off the beaten path, last weekend the caravan was base camp then we hiked over another mountain for some amazing fishing for cutties then a great fish chowder over the fire. Having more than one set up gives more options for places to go and who is joining is all.
