A few months back I got new shocks for my 5th gen. I paid a little over $400 for Bilstein 5100's and my local place put them in for $300.
Just now I went to the same place to get a quote for struts on my wife's 2008 Lexus RX350, which is basically a Highlander. They quoted me $1100 for four OEM KYB struts and another $500 for labor! What the hell? And I asked how much it would cost if I got the struts somewhere else and had them do it, and he told me $600!
Why is it so much more expensive? Just because it's a Lexus? Why is the labor twice as much as my truck? They're ordinary struts, and I believe they are interchangeable with the Highlander. Is it just brand name markup? It's not a bad shop I go to for this stuff, but they are a corporation.
I feel like just getting them online and going to a family shop that my in laws have been using for years.
