What's a good offer ???

I'm looking to buy this 1999 4Runner limited 4wd with 212k from a friend of mine. He told me to make him a fair offer. Trucks is in great shape he has taken really good care of it interior has normal wear n tear on the driver side since its leather all stock.What would you guys consider a fair offer would be?? He is but his 4Runner is in mint shape exterior is like new interior pretty good shape as well always maintained to the T. Plus silver exterior I believe it has a locker

I would go for $3300 so he can talk you up to $3500. I pretty much stole my 02 4wd with 135k for $1200. They can vary! Good luck

If it has a rear locker I would be willing to go up a little - but I would pay more attention to the maintenance items personally.

1- How long till the next timing belt change? That is a pretty penny in maintenance $$.

2- How are the tires? The worse they are the more it will cost you in the first 30/60/90 days. I wish I had paid more attention to this when I bought mine.

3- What does need fixing that you would need to do? There is always something that is on the list; what is it and why is it still on the list.

4- Any upgrades that he has done that might add some value to it? I overlooked some flaws because the 4R had a ToyTec lift and s/c on it. I should have paid more attention to the s/c because it needed an overhaul immediately.

Just a few things to double check before you make a big purchase from a good friend.

These 4Runner have good value here in TX . Most sell for 4-5 and that's for 2wd. The 4wd are hard to find. This one is 4wd with the rear locker. That's why I was thinking 4K is fair

When was the last tune up? How are the tires, lower ball joints and rotors?

That's the difference in price at that mileage.

I would say $3000 flat, I know when I worked as a buyer for an "anonymous" largest car dealer in the country, I would pay 1500-2000 at auction. Private sale comes with a higher tag, but give yourself some room to fix any initial problems.

maintenance records/receipts go a long ways. depending on whats been done and your friendship... low end 3k, high end 5k.

Understand the Texas 3rd gen scene - I looked for about 5 months before I found mine. I ended up paying $8k for it too - but it came with extras that added the value and was local enough I did not have to travel far to get it. Is your friend's 4R stock or does it already have some mods done that you would want to do?


In the end only you and your friend can say exactly what it is worth - but I would feel fair paying around $4,500 if it has the working locker. Those are not common down here and it is an expensive upgrade. Again - tires are a maintenance item but should weigh in on the price considering they are a decent investment in a used vehicle. I almost drove to Austin to look at/buy a 3rd gen 4R that had an OME lift, basic armor, and rear locker for $5k last summer. I was fine with the price considering the upgrades.
