What's a Good Tire?

Was wondering what tires different people use for the 4Runner. The Sport I'll be getting has 265/65R-17. Supposedly this size is harder to get LT tires for.

I've ran LT's on my Pathfinder for many years. I tow a good sized trailer, and go offroad a small amount. The stiff sidewall of the LT is best for towing, as it reduces sway. I've always heard it is good for offroad as well, as the sidewall resists sidewall damage better.

So I'm wondering what might be a good compromise, or if going with a LT is just good insurance during those times I might find myself on a rocky trail.

I've been looking into the Michelin Cross-Terrain SUV tires for both our 4runners. Excellent ratings and excellent write-ups.

The Michelin Cross-terrain only comes in P metric construction.

I personally would go with an LT tire, you're less likely to get a puncture on 4wd trails.

what's the difference between a pmetric construction and a non-pmetric ???

The difference is in the P and LT. A tire begining with P is a passenger tire. A tire begining with LT is a light truck tire and has stronger sidewalls and a high load capacity.

any 265/70 will fit as well -- BFG A/T ... REVO ... etc.

i'm really enjoying my BFGs ... and loved the MTRs ... hear great things, always, about the REVOS.

I just put a set of Revos on the truck on Thursday -- more at http://www.toyota-4runner.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=7440 For my purposes, the LT construction was not required.

Reviewers on tirerack.com give the Revos exceptionally high marks - much better than the Michelans.

Wonder what kind of mileage to expect & will the rolling resistance be as good as the Michelans?

The ratings were one reason I went with them. I've heard from some members on this forum to expect a mileage hit, but with just 200 miles on these, it's too early to tell. But in the rain today, they certainly felt solid.

Well Tirerack also has them at about $40 a tire less than then Miches.

I'm getting about 50k on my LT Pathfinders, and hopefully they would do as good. Are people actually getting 65k - as per the warranty on the Michelans?

Yeah, I LOVE my Michelin cross terrains! But let me say the tread pattern is deceiving as it does not look that agressive. I've been driving them on snow in Alaska and they have performed way beyon my expectations. Simply an excellent tire.

All I can say is that I am very pleased with my Michs. Have not ridden on any other tires on this 4runner.

From the many discussions on the forum, the answers are no, it will not rub, and you gain about a half inch in height.

Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revo - for sure

I got a set of these for my '95 4Runner about three months before I decided to trade it in. It was the only painful thing about giving up my old T4R for the 2004 model -- which I absolutely love.

The Dueler Revos I think were the best tires I've ever had on a light truck/SUV -- good and sticky on the wet or on the dirt, and relatively quiet and fuel-efficient on the highways. Hydroplaning? Fuhgeddaboutit. It won't happen with these tires.
