Hey Y'all, I'm looking for advice on a recent 1st Gen I found for sale.

The rig looks like it's been very well taken care of over the years. Paint looks good in pictures and interior is in really good shape.

Has a fairly high suspension lift, don't know what kind though.

Tires with plenty of tread and newer rims

Recently fully rebuilt 22RE engine. (Apprx. $4000 invested)

Clutch is in good shape - said it didn't need replacing when engine was installed.

ARB lockers 5:29 gears front and rear.

ARB bumpers

ARB air compressor

Winch

High pinion angle differentials

Chromoly axles

Sliders

No rust.

It's an 85. Guy is asking $13,500. Says he has $18,000 invested.

What do you think? Good deal or too much?

Hey, I think you're right. This looks like it. The guy who owns it now bought it from his friend. The friend told him he bought it from a guy in Colorado. So this matches up. Thanks for responding with this information. Gives me way more info on the truck than I had before. It does have a different engine now and ARB lockers but I think the rest is the same.

Very cool you recognized the rig.
 
Beautiful! Definitely the same rig with that lower exo. Decent price too with that list of parts from the other thread. Make him knock a grand off for driving it in the snow anyway :rockthrow:
 
I have a very similar 4runner I just listed today on here (I won't be pimping it here, just look in classifieds if you want).

One thing I will say is 4k in a rebuild on a 22re seems silly to me. Even if you have someone rebuild it for you (turn-key), I would not expect to pay that much. Maybe he has a lot of upgrades? My total was under 1k doing all the work myself with new parts and minor upgrades.

One thing is for sure, it is a good looking rig, and I am almost sure I have seen photos of it around on the net.
 
All depends on what he had done to it. My motor was over 2500 bucks, but is not stock by any means.

A complete, long block, crate engine from DOA Racing will set you back almost 4 grand right there, but will walk away from most 4 and 6 cylinder trucks.

Same goes with TCR Performance. Just their stroker block KIT is 2600 bucks, that doesn't include the actual block or installation!

Not saying anything about your build, but using auto store parts vs. using high-end quality-made parts is the difference between a $1,000.00 build and a $4,000.00+ build. Pretty sure you didn't throw ARP studs in that head, nor did you run Koyo bearings for everything. And I'm betting that the pistons are cast, not Hypereutectic or forged, right? Generic or stock cam? Or is it a Dougherty, TRD or LCE cam? Stainless valves or something from over-the-counter parts store?

There's nothing wrong with building an engine using parts from Autozone or Pep Boys, their parts work just fine as replacements when an engine goes south, and I've rebuilt many things using those same parts from the nearest parts store. But, if I'm building an engine that's going to see some hardcore abuse, such as running the Rubicon or wheelin' in Utah, and I'm expecting to drive there and back every time I do a run, I'm gonna look for parts that are way over what a minimal replacement part is good for.
 
I see your point. I chose my rebuild parts wisely... and this engine has driven me 18k miles without a hitch.. a good amount of that has been middle of nowhere.

The reason I chose not to dump excessive amount of money into the 22re was because in the end, it wasn't a bang for your buck situation. IMO, there are other routes to go which have better results (assuming you were willing to spend that kind of cash on a 22re in the first place).

Bottom line, the info we are given is:

"Recently fully rebuilt 22RE engine. (Apprx. $4000 invested)"

If I was the person who wrote that, and invested in any of the items you mentioned, I would make sure to included it all in that statment. Which is why I say a 4k rebuild without any upgrades mentioned sounds silly.
 
It mentions ARB high pinions in the plural sense?
As in front and rear?
A high pinion diff is generally only mounted in the front, unless he put in reverse cut gears if I recall correctly.

I can easily see having 18k into a truck.
I would find out about specialty car insurance from a place like https://www.hagerty.com

Trying to get Allstate or Farmers to payout on something like that could be a night2.
Get receipts from the owner if you can

DOA engines don't exactly have the best reputation around (hopefully the engine was done by someone else) I friend of mine ordered new head bolts for his 3.0, they were all different lengths. .gofigure

Such a tall rig! I love seeing these 1st gens in the snow. My '86 has no lift, but she's still great in adverse road conditions, even with bad tires.
