whats so great about the scion hu?

text display and color, better mp3 performnce, steering wheel control, what else? is it louder? better sound for radio?

i have a stock sr5 radio for a 06 and i think it sucks. you can barely hear the ipod thru aux, the lows are real low, no mid or highs, and staticy.

debating to buy another toyota product for a stereo.

Scion Radio

There are MANY on this forum who have relaced the stock radio that is really poor quality for a Toyota, and replaced with the Scion unit. I have done this mod as well and it's like night and day. I do not know how much these units are now going for on ebay, but I purchased one for $80.00 (on ebay) then sold my stock unit for $35.00.

However, if you have a really critical ear (and the money) you may want to go for something "highline". There is plenty of info here - do a search.
 
The Scion HU has a built in amplifier and is an easy plug and play exact drop-in replacement for the stock Toyota HU. I just put an '06 Scion in my new Runner and it makes a world of difference. I got mine brand new in the Toyota box off ebay for $100. I think the reason it's such a popular mod is because it's relatively inexpensive, it's easy to do yourself and it makes a huge difference in sound quality compared to the stock unit.
 
I have never heard a Scion HU, but do you guys think it sounds better than the factory JBL system in the 4Runner?

What is the model number for an 06 Scion head unit. It doesn't seem that abundant on ebay anymore. I see a lot of 05 head units. Is there an advantage to the 06 one? Thanks.
 
The model number for the '06 Scion HU with the single disc is the T1807. It's the one with the volume control knob in the center. This is what I installed in my Runner........as for differences between the '05 and '06........other than the volume control knob vs. the push-buttons I don't know if there are any.

Mark! Where have you been during our meetings? We compared my Scion HU and Drew's stock JBL and he was just pissed. Didn't help he had a V6 either :D.

It's a huge difference. I wouldn't say audiophile quality but MUCH better than stock. You can hear it this weekend if you're coming to the meet.
 
scion aux miniport

If I replace the radio in my 06 with a Scion head unit, can I retain the function of the aux miniport? Does the scion have the same input as the toyota radio?

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to attend that meeting. Drew was not at the last Harold's meeting.
 
I just replaced my 06 4runner with an 06 scion HU, the auxilary mini port will work and does work with my IPod as long as you get the scion HU with the aux output (06 models). Earlier models of the scion HU does not have the aux output.
 
VQD83, thanks for the info. Is there a model number or specific cosmetic difference I should look for to know the Scion head unit is an 06 model?
 
just look for the scion hu with the aux button. the only cosmetic difference that these scion hu with the aux button control have that differs from the rest is the round volume control in the center of the hu

Are you talking the single-knob, single-disc 06 Scion HU or the ipod version (three knobs)?

There are a ton of auxiliary adapters for the single knob version, ranging from the basic PIE adapter ($70) that gives you a single input, right up to adapters that give you some ipod contol via the stereo and will charge the ipod too. Basically they plug in to the cd-changer port on the back of the HU, so installing them requires a couple hours of dash dismantling.

The 06 Scions have that stereo jack connection. I wanted to use that for my dvd system. I was going to get the ipod2car for my ipod. I had initially wanted to get the 06 scion HU with the 3 knobs for the ipod support, but found out that there's an issue with the availability of a cable connector.

So, now I still want the 06 Scion HU, but wanted to make sure there are cable adapters available for the stereo jack on either 06 versions, and if they have the CD changer port on the back to attach the ipod2car unit.
