Whats the best battery these days

Hello All

My battery just took a dump in my GX470 and I wondered what battery has been good for you all. I am building a Overland rig out of it and need something pretty beef cake, I will add the second battery later. What battery has proven good for the collective here?

You can install the Sears diehard platinum group 31, should be the biggest u can put, otherwise any group 27 or 24 works. I use dual group 31 and it seems fine for my needs.

I've had good luck with optima red tops in other vehicles. I see a lot of folks running odyssey batteries or the cheaper version, diehard platinum.

The diehard platinums are great AGM batteries. I ran one in my last truck with solid results. Cost $225-250

I opted fir Duracell AGM made by East Penn in my 4Runner to give them a try. They are lower AH individually as they are smaller then the Diehard but since I am running 2 so it wasn't a concern. I have done some pretty deep discharges and they charge at a decent rate. Overall happy with them. Cost $125

Dealer sold me an $80 junker a couple years ago. Had to eat it as I was far away from a dealer a week later when it died.

Napa fixed me up with a good one.

I second the Optima vote, they're expensive as a mug but well worth the extra bux IMO. I'd go Interstate if you're looking for a standard battery.

It is pretty solid with 750 CCA (though more like 775 as that is what the Deka is rated at) and is only about 40 pounds.

There's only a few battery manufacturers out there.

I like batteries made by Johnson Controls (Diehard, Optima, Napa - just to name a few).

All my replacement batteries for the past 30+ years have been Diehards. It seems that no matter when I go there....they always have one of their batteries on sale. I keep my vehicles 10+ years and over 300k miles..and I've never had to replace a battery more then once. You people in the South aren't so lucky.

I wish Cooper made a battery, it would be the best in the world!!

I am still running factory battery, 128K and over 10 years. Still strong, i am sure it will crap tomorrow since i said that.

I just picked up a AGM from O'rileys, a local chain. It was $145' little shorter than OEM but came with a spacer.

In my experience, Optimas aren't what they used to be. I won't use them again in anything I own.

I was eying the Group 31 Diehard platinum because it has amazing specs, but it was overkill for my situation (not to mention expensive and HEAVY). If you just need a starting battery like me, the Autozone Duralast Platinum is sweet, but if you plan on running a lot of accessories with the engine off, I'd go witht the Diehard Platinum group 31.

Reviews of users on here actually convinced me to go with the Duralast Platinum as a replacement for the Panasonic though my Panasonic is still kicking, and I have the Duralast Platinum in the cargo area ready to go when the Panasonic kicks the bucket. I wasn't sure it was going to last this past winter because it was pretty slow to crank on some of the really cold days but it never let me down.

I also got the Duralast Platinum for around $125, can't beat that!

I just came from costco here in albuquerque and they said that they don't carry a size 27 battery for the 4runner. Do you know what size you ended up getting or will anything work. The closest they showed me was a 23. Thanks.

By the way, My original panasonic has lasted over 10 years and 203,000 miles.

From an abuse standpoint the optima or similar (dry cell) is hard to beat. We ran one (and I mean the same one) in our dirt late model for a couple of years before we sold it. That poor thing took some hard hits not to mention the vibration and jarring under its "normal" use. I use one in my hotrod too.

I dont know about that !! The Optima has a terrible reputation. The Red Top has never lasted more than 4 years for me. I switched to a Die Hard Platinum for my Corvette. I'll stick to the lead acid wet battery for the 4 runner when I need a change
