Whats the best battery these days

Optima Yellow top in my T4R from 2011... still going.

Mom just had her battery die in the GX470, lasted 10 years, that stock 84 battery Toyota uses. Very heavy too.

Had to get in there with some baking soda and a tooth brush to clean up all the battery acid on the GX, mine is 4 years older and spotless ...as far as battery acid that is.

I will never use anything but a sealed AGM style, I hold on to cars a really long time. The AGM wont eat up any thing due to spillage like a standard lead style will.
Battery acid killed my old 914, ate the control arm mount and part of the unibody.

Today I replaced my Autozone Gold that was from 2010. That was a good battery and just starting loosing power this week. Quickly died to no ability to hold a charge.

The replacement is a X2Power AGM from Batteries Plus. 1080 CA. I never heard the starter spin so fast before!

Bumping this thread for visibility since I'm going to need a new battery in the coming months. I'm considering picking up my first AGM, but it's about $25-$30 more than the comparable old school battery. The two main reasons to get an AGM style is the sealed container that doesn't leak and can be rotated without leaking is that right?

I run an Interstate 31-AGM7 heavy truck battery. It fits but you’ll need longer cables with ring terminals attached for the threaded posts. We abuse these batteries at work and they keep ticking. My company purchases 800 -1000 of these a year so we’re always looking for the best batteries. We’ve found these to be sufficient. Heavy and a little overkill for most people but if you’re running a lot of accessories or mild stereo, get one. With our recent artic blast we saw temperatures of -30 and the 4Runner never even hesitated to start.

Every couple of years or so it seems the battery brands all change for the worse. One exception always seems to be East Penn - they just seem a lot more consistent than the others. Barring the extra coin for a Braille, Odyssey or similar - anything from East Penn seems to be the best choice or maybe Interstate. The OEM Mopar battery in my Dodge pickup died during this super cold snap we've had lately - replaced it with a Deka Intimidator from East Penn. These are rock solid, but not exactly cheap at around $225 for that application.

But, with the insane amount of electronics in that truck and the need for reliablity due to my job - peace of mind is worth it. I've also used these in smaller sizes for my vintage garden tractors - especially the old twin cylinder Wheel Horse. Those old Kohlers will vibrate a battery to death and their charging systems can hit a battery very hard, not to mention rolling over all that cast iron is not exactly easy. Most of the older models I have use the single cylinder K-series with a starter-generator, those abuse a battery beyond belief. So far, so good - not one battery issue with the Deka in any of them .

The same East Penn line can be had at O'Reilly's auto parts - their platinum line is all from EP and have a great warranty to boot.

The X2 Power 27f looks quite interesting to me. 5 year, non prorated warranty and 10% off at Batteries +. I bought at the dealer in late 2017, so I'm not ready yet. Think I'll try it a few years from now.

But I don't run any accessories or aftermarket electronics in my 4Runner.

I replaced my battery with an Interstate from Costco back in October. $86 for a new battery is cheaper than I have ever seen in my life. I guess we'll see how long it lasts. The temperature this past week has been down between 5-20F and it starts right up. I'm happy with it so far.

Interstate for me. By far the beefiest i have come across. Mine is over 10 years and starts my 3rd gen great in single digit temps.

Thanks for the tip on the Costco discount! The one they sell at Costco and the one that Interstate lists on their website are the exact same specs, but one is $89 and the other $131. I'll be hitting up my roommate for his Costco membership shortly. Hah!

FWIW, I had an Interstate Megatron battery in my 3rd gen for 7 years and it was flawless.

Yeah I figure the price is so low and combined with Costco's customer service, what could go wrong? Their return policies are great, so if it dies early I'll just have them replace it.

Walmart EverStart Maxx is my pick... assuming its the Yellow label (5 year Johnson Controls manufactured) Its better than the Costco Interstate 3.5 year battery.

That said, I have both in different vehicles and both have been working well without problems.

I think the Autozone and EverStart are the exact same battery made by East Penn I believe. Either should be good. I found this Deka information yesterday. Their batteries are made by East Penn and they have a cross reference chart to show the rebranded names for various retailers. Both of those show up under the cross reference of the Deka Ultimate - Part Number: 724FMF

I have always run Optima Red Tops and been very happy. Most recently I had a red top on my 2001 Silverado and abused it for the 2 years I owned it. I had a bad fuel pump for over a year that wouldn't supply the correct pressure to the lines and I would have to turn it over multiple times to get it to start. So like I said, this thing was abused. Hot or cold, this battery never let me down and was even discharged down to 4 volts at one point because of a bad alternator, but after a quick 30 min charge at my local Oreillys and an alternator change I was back good as new. I will end up purchasing one for my runner soon enough but funds are low right now.

Regardless of what brand, I will never not use a sealed AGM again. They are clean, hold up well, and take a beating.

None. I would get a Duracell made by East Penn for Battery Plus. I used AGM on my Subaru but since the 4Runner is not capable of charging an AGM properly (5th gen anyway!?), I would stick to the regular version.

I think the Maxx is the yellow label... they just look like this one, and is more expensive of the two non marine options.
