What's the best head unit?

I've got an older Pioneer DEH-6400BT that hasn't let me down yet. I had it for two years in my IS300 and now three years in my 4runner and its been a champ.

I've had a couple Pioneers too, i have had good experience with them that's why it's at the top of the list.

I think thats what im running in mine but they dont fit the factory speaker harness/holder. I had to remove the plastic and fab up a mount for them... Not positive on the size since its been a while but there is plenty of info out there on them... I would go to Crutchfield and type in your truck then click speakers. They will pull up the exact size to fit factory or include the correct size bracket to re mount but will give you a good reference.

6.5" for the front fits, at least in my case, unless you're getting speakers that have a significantly deeper mounting depth than the factory speakers, and 5.25" speakers fit in the back with the mounting plate.

Alpine, JL, Polk, Rockford Fosgate. I've got a pioneer hu in my 4Runner that came out of my car because after months of trying to find an alternator whine in my system it was diagnosed back to the Pionerr headunit. There is a small pico fuse that blocks noise out that is extremely sensitive to voltage swings and once it pops it allows noise through the system. Plugged an alpine in and the noise went away instantly. But in my 4Runner there is no alternator noise but I'm also not running amps and component speakers in it although just yesterday I started to hear a crackle over the speakers that changed with rpm so either my electrical system is getting crazy or the headunit is damaged more and letting noise in.

Point of the story is I like Alpine headunits. I went cheap and bought a Pioneer and had problems. Sucked it up and bought an Alpine and have been happy ever since. Not to mention the sound quality improved with the Alpine over the Pioneer. Had both radios tuned at the same shop so it was a good comparison.

Knew there has to be a reason why alpine products or so over priced Lol (jk) I've researched a lot about alpine and so far haven't found too many complaints, i guess that's a testament that backs up their reputation but i'm on a budget.. oh well might as well wait a little longer and get it done right. If you get one with touchscreen the motorized face is pretty nice, tilts up for perfect viewing angle.

I went with a Pioneer DEH-80PRS. Single DIN. Pretty customizable with a lot of options to grow your system and not too flashy. I'm pretty pleased with it. I've always had good luck with Pioneer stuff.

Sony used to make crappy HU. They are really good now. I own a Sony single din HU and I really like it. Built much better than an equivalent Pioneer. I like pioneer, but Sony really has stepped their game up. My Sony HU is 3 years old, no issues.

I absolutely love my JL audio equipment. I bought all of it gently used for 1/3 the price off CL, because it's expensive as hell. I absolutely think that Infinity Kappa are the best speakers for the money. They stand behind their products very well. I bought a set of Alpine Type R for my 4Runner, they sounded good, but not built as well as the infinitys. The Alpines felt cheap. I really like alpine stuff, their HU are good. For me, Alpine or Sony HU.

Ive been runnin this double DIN Pioneer deck in mine now for a while and have absolutely 0 complaints. I love this thing.. if I had to buy another headunit in life - I'd be buying another one of these. hah. Its got all the fancy bells and whistles, Bluetooth, hands free phone mic, USB, CD/MP3, and a million different colors to choose from (or customize) to match whatever color you make all your interior. :yo: Looks and sounds great.

Colors can be two-toned as well (control the buttons vs the display separately or together).

Good luck on your purchase. Whatever you end up, hope it works great for you.

You COULD fit 6.5s in the rear if you felt like rigging up your own mounting plate and some "custom" work.

Not sure if it's been mentioned. Pioneer makes a great head unit (I have a double-din AVH-2700) but there's no separate wire for the power antenna, it just operates off of the remote-on wire that you'd send to a subwoofer.

What this means is that if your radio is on (virtually, if your car is on) then your power antenna is up. It only goes down when you shut the car off.

I cut the wire to my power antenna since I have Sirius. I love Pioneer products but they need to add a separate out for the power antenna.

My Pioneer deck has a power antenna wire in the harness. However, it acted the same way (going up anytime the headunit was powered - regardless of what setting I was on). So I (like a lot of people on this forum) hard-wired in a switch for the power antenna wire so I can control when it goes up or not. :yo: So now its almost always in the off position (stays down) unless I decide to switch over to the Radio.. then I'll hit the switch on and the antenna comes up.

It's a matter of how much you want to spend. Me, I like the best so I went with the Kenwood 994S because it was "dashcam ready" meaning I also bought the Kenwood 520 dashcam which integrates and wires directly to the headunit so I can view videos from the camera a t anytime. Watch front view screen if I want etc.

Also wired in a Maestro module behind headunit which integrates with the vehicle computer and now I retian all my steering wheel controls. Will display a long list of gauges from the toyota ECU like EGT temps, transmission temps etc. It also allows me to adjust on the screen all those factory toyota settings that some people go to the deale rto change like door lock settings, window settings, lock unlock beeps volume etc... It has everything its amazing.

And of course the sound quality is awesome and gives me the options to add the amps and everything later.

I installed a Toyota NAV head unit from a 2013 Corolla complete with Entune module in my 97. The Scion T1819 sounded better that I removed.

It's built by Pioneer and is Sat ready just need the antenna.

My 97 SR5 build and repair thread has it all on the install.

There is also a Ultimate Scion radio thread in the audio section. It's near the top so should be easy to find.

Toyota makes two adapters to retro fit newer radios into older models. However, the radio is physically larger so some trimming and bracket altering is required. I bought my T1819 radio on Craig's list for 50 dollars with the adapter plugs. You can find radios on eBay with the adapters if your patient. When I put the NAV radio in I already did the hard work. It was simply remove the T1819 radio and bolt in the Corolla NAV radio.

The T1819 is a really cool great sounding 200w radio. Bluetooth, hands free calling, bla, bla, bla. I liked it so much I figured out how to put a T1819 stereo in my 2002 Saturn SL1. I drive 50min each way to work.

I couldn't be any happier with it. This thing does everything. If your a brand snob then this isn't for you. But its worth a look.
