A diversity antenna presents, in this case, two signals to the receiver. Circuitry in the receiver will monitor both antennas and use the strongest signal of the two. another example is how 2.4GHz. RC planes can maneuver and perform aerobatics and always have a good signal to their receivers regardless of the plane's attitude with respect to the transmitter's antenna.
