I bought this 4Runner used last summer and noticed this vent in the front passenger wheel well. I don't recall my last 4th gen having this. Is this from a CAI? There's nothing in there right now - it's the stock air intake. Sorry about the brightness - it's a cell phone and it was really bright outside today.
What's this in the front wheel well?

Not sure the real purpose, but on mine, it's the damned spot that my tire rubs when in reverse!!
I'm guessing it's vents for keeping the brakes cool, but I don't know that.
Ah, so yours has it too then. Maybe they all have it and I just never noticed it on my last one. The factory intake is closer to the top of the wheel well. Maybe there's a channel there that brings air up to the factory intake.

I used to have that on my runner, not since I sliced and diced up that plastic to fit my 285's though! No more vent, no more rubbing

If you notice you only have it on the side that the intake is on. It allows air to flow up to the intake easier. Not a drag reducer, if it was it would be on both sides.

Think of it this way.... If you have mud tires or ones with more aggressive tread... When your moving forward the liner would just be rubbed, but pushed forward making it unnoticeable... When in reverse the lugs would act like big claws to grab the plastic from underneath and pull up etc making the whole thing a big mess which is what happens to most people...
however I don't have this problem since I cut my liner up to the washer bottle and pulled it all the way back to get these 35's to fully rotate with no problms... nothin like gettin happy with the dremel LOL :reddance:
