Yes, get P rated tires. She'll thank you for the better ride and you'll thank yourself for the much lighter tires than LT. That said, my short list consists of Hankook Dynapro ATm, Cooper Discoverer AT3 and Falken Wildpeak AT.

Im about ready for new tires and figured might as well dress up the rims also. probably go standard black TRD rims and maybe one size bigger than stock on the tire size. Vehicle is driven on pavement 80% and on fairly easy trails about 20%. Any recommendations on Highway tires that are not too noisy. I'm going blind reading all the tire forums..LOL Thanks from a new guy..

Which one is "P" rated? What is "P" rated? Also, what is the "LT" designation? Light?
I love the TRD Black, and I think 275/70R17 works really well in stock, unlifted 4Runner, and I think that's how the TRD Baja Chase Team 4Runner is setup..

If only BFG made the 275/70/R17 KO/KO2 in a C Load Range - I'd be all over it
E's are not for me unfortunately, but love the look of KO2 275's on stock SR5+Spidertrax or TRD wheels... KO 265's in C Load Range are my preference...

What's the diff between C load range vs E load range? I think BFG is coming out with 265/70R17 load range C (model 66255) in March 2015.

Indeed. Reference the "KO2's went on sale today" thread - I'm all over it whining about how long it was taking to track down facts on the actual availability of 265 KO2's in C Load Range / 66255
... Made many a phone call due to statements in that thread...I needed new tires in November, so I missed the KO2 265 C Load boat. Got another "Old" set of original KO's in 265/C...

What make me or you need "C"?

Check 1Engineer's Tire Guide in the Stickies. Read up on tire selection and specs to get a better idea...
E's are a 10-ply sidewall. They were too heavy and I didn't like the handling/steering response at highway speeds ~ 75MPH.
LT-E's are for heavy-duty off-roading where sidewall puncture resistance is very important (or for extreme weight loads). Not for me and my personal application of my T4R...
LT-C's are still overkill for my needs, but I much prefer them over the stock tires - and I've been running BFG All-Terrains across 3 Toyota 4x4's now (like 7 sets worth over more than a decade). I'll gladly throw my hard earned cash at BFG KO's and KO2's as they have proven themselves in my personal application again and again...

Can only compare to stock tires or other BFG KO's - but I don't find the noise much more objectionable than stock. A little more noise - sure - but my ride is an audio nirvanah on wheels (spent 1/4 the cost of the vehicle on the audio system
), and I would not put up with obnoxious tire noise in any event. I find the KO's to be perfectly acceptable in terms of road noise...
Have owned a lot of AT tires and a few MTs. I'll try to summarize the more current tread patterns I've owned...
- Several sets of BFG ATs - good all rounder with great traction in dry conditions, but clogs with mud fairly easily. The open shoulders of the new design should help remedy this problem, making it a much better all around design. Would like to try the new design - should be a great choice if road noise is kept in check.
- Currently running Cooper AT3s on the 4Runner and our Pathfinder. Great all round tire. Treadwear seems to be good so far. Impressed with offroad traction and on road handling balance. A little more tread void than the Hankook ATM and it seems to help in muddy/loamy conditions. My first choice for an AT if you spend much time on the highway. Wish it had a little more aggressive sidewall design.
- Hankook ATM - really good all terrain. Smooth ride on pavement and good dry trail traction. Would pick AT3s over the ATM if you plan to spend some time offroad.
- Goodyear Duratracs - Great tire on and off road. Was surprised at how well it handled on road and even on the highway. Tracks straight without pulling the truck around. Quiet ride when new - grew louder with age - got to be pretty loud near the end of its life. Good choice for a more aggressive AT. The AT3 is really good, though, so don't know if the increased noise of the Duratrac is worth the minimal performance gain over the AT3. Looks good and got surprisingly good mileage out of mine (E rated).
- Toyo Open Country MT - Excellent traction offroad and decent road manners for an MT. Quiet for an MT, but still has a noticeable hum. Heavy tire and has that MT pull to one side (common with MTs that have an asymmetrical tread). Sticky tread is on the soft side so watch the tire pressure and wheel balance closely to keep treadwear even.
-Hankook MT - Great aggressive offroad tire with decent road manners and decent road noise. Good treadwear for an MT. Heavy and tough tire that can take a lot of abuse and works in all conditions. Symmetrical tread means less MT pull - tracks well and wears evenly. Top choice of the MT tires I've owned if it'll be on a daily driver. Got louder with age, but still not terrible. Good tire that is really a mild MT or super aggressive AT.
Have also run Dunlop MT and MaxxTraction (really good tire but discontinued), Pirelli Scorpion AT (old and new tread designs - newer design is a great road tire for occassional offroad). Bridgestone AT - good road oriented AT.
Have run P, LT-C, LT-D and LT-E. I think a lot more is made of the differences between sidewall ratings than is really there. If you plan to go offroad stay away from P tires and look closely at tire weight, as well. One companies E rated tire that is light (meaning not a lot of rubber) may be less harsh than a really heavy C rated tire. The BFGs aren't heavy tires so I wouldn't worry about an E tire from BFG.
Summary - Best AT I've owned is the Cooper AT3. Want a more aggressive look, then go Duratracs. Best MT for a truck that will be on the road is the Hankook MT. Think that the new BFG AT will be a good tire and would be a tough choice against the AT3. Running 275/70/17 AT3s - good fit with no rub.

Only my 2cts but having a 4th & 5th gen with cooper at3 on the 05 & brig revos on 11 have to say both are & have been great . Our summer rain storms cause havoc with oil & water mix coops were fine , now we don't get to much black ice but close (is there a tire for black ice?) . Revos were a expedient choice & will be gone when they wear out (stmaxx or at3) but I must say for a 285 they have balanced out well & are a good ride especially now that installed 51s all around. Obviously depends on where & how you drive so that must be a factor , ok I'm done back to Duke v NC .
She'll thank you more knowing much less chance of flat tire with LT.
I much prefer load C - ideal for SUV and light duty 1/2 tons and can handle about anything but most severe conditions off road. Think Load E is overkill and adds too much weight but also prefer to P. I would not run P on a 4x4 that plans on going anywhere you wouldn't drive a Corolla! In last 25 years, have had 3 flats on P tires in 15,000 miles - have driven mainly C but some E load several hundred thousand miles and have yet to have a flat.
I guess, since I want to do some offroading, "P-tires" are not for me. So, "LT-" it is.
I will look further into LRE vs LRC.

I am leaning towards trying the new KO2 now, in either 265-70R17 (stock) or 275-70R17 (TRD team cfg). According to 1engineer's thread, 275-70R17 should not rub and should be clear.... yet some postings else where said otherwise.... so I am a bit confused (ie. more homework is needed)
Currently BFG AT KO2 should already have 275-70R17 LRE available, and next month, it should be the stock 265-70R17 in both LRE and LRC.
I will look further into LRE vs LRC.
