Wheel Bearing Replacement

One of my wheel bearings is going bad and I need to replace it. Just turned 200,000 miles and still on the original bearings. Planned on doing it myself but then I read somewhere how difficult it is on 3rd gen's. I think they said they aren't like old school bearings and the axle has to be partially removed. Looking to know if that is true and if I should do it myself or take it to a shop.

Super easy. The CV axle has to be 3/4 undone to do it, so consider replacing original CV axles at same time. I replaced both my front axles in about 60 minutes.

Honestly, Toyota bearings are super stout. I wouldnt change them unless they were bad. Most aftermarket bearings are crap compared to Toyota bearings and OEM are very pricey. I have almost 200k on mine, no plans on changing them and I'm anal about my maintenance.

If you want to change them, change the whole assembly, not just the bearing. If you don't, you will need a huge press and it's not worth the trouble.

They are very stout. Both my front bearing seals are pretty shot. Lots of mudding and still kicking fine.

To the OP what makes you think front wheel bearings are failing?

Thanks for the help guys. If I decide to do the job myself what else do I need besides the bearings and CV axles?

I replaced mine a little over a year ago. I ordered OEM ones from Camelback Toyota and then took off the spindle. Took the spindles down to a machine shop and had them press out the old bearing and press in the new one. I also want to say there are two seals. I replaced the cheap ones and reused the more expensive ones...I think...

I'm in the middle of this right now. I bought my parts from Camelback. I got all new parts. You will need the follow:

1: 2- 90369-54001 Bearings about $65 ea
2: 2- 90316-69001 Outer Seal D type $35 ea (have to be somewhat careful removing
them if you want to reuse them)
3: 2- 90312-95001 Inner Seals V type $15 ea (once again be careful removing them
if you want to reuse them)
4: 2- 90521-99114 Snap Ring $5 ea (you will need these as they can get
messed up when pressing the
bearing out)

You will definitely need an HD press. I used a 20 ton press and I thought I was going to break something. I haven't put it all back together yet as I had a setback, but I'm pretty sure it will go together easier than it came apart.
Oh and as Stir fry said this is an excellent time to replace the LBJs $86 OEM Don't use anything else.
Oh and now would be a good time to do the TBU
Oh Also since you have it apart do the LCA bushings
Yep it really never stops.....

If it was me replacing the wheel bearings, I'd find the whole assembly used via car-part.com and throw it in. Toyota wheel bearings are extremely stout and rarely go bad. It will save tons of time and headache.

Then do new CV axles, and OEM LBJ.

Do this if you aren't pretty experienced and mechanically inclined, but you want to save money. Also, you might consider printing out the FSM pages on this replacement so that the shop has the proper order of operations. If you take the part off and take it in, I don't think it should be too too expensive. Alot of the time for a shop is in jacking it up and pulling the parts off.

It's oem bearing just not oem seals. I bought the kid without the hubs. And replaced both sides :)

Thanks kolelt; I just posted recently about a possible bad bearing so I just ordered this as well for the front passenger side. I watched a video changing it out on a gen 4 and it looked pretty easy, but I have limited tools up here so debating just taking it to a local guy to have it done.

I'm just putting together an idea of how much it would cost to replace front bearings on mine.

Is that list of parts all what would need to be replaced, and whatever was left out can be reused?

example:
43524-35010 Inner bearing Spacer
43515-35010 ABS ring

And then axle nut and such can be reused?

All I should be getting is the bearings and seals?

I forgot someone does offer a hub kit. Looks like I need to send out an uninformed apology to Antman (Jeff) when he posted that there was a hub kit out there.

The one I had replaced a couple of years ago required a 40 ton press. My brother's 20 ton Sunex didn't have the ass to do it.

Given the age of everything in the knuckle, I'd buy the four parts new that JRZ2000T4RLTD listed in his post....

The ABS ring and spacer are "loose". They come off fairly easy. Not pressed on or anything. They actually should fall right out. You "might" even be able to reuse the inner seal - the more expensive one- if you pry it up and out a little bit at a time. I just replaced everything while I was in there. Axle nut can be reused. Might need a coter pin.

Thanks, that's what I was wanting to know.

That's the plan. I just didn't want to order parts that I really shouldn't need to replace.

You should be good to go with just those parts. Given where you live I don't know how bad the rust will be, if there is any. With pressed in rusted bearings I have seen people have to torch them out.

If your CVs are original, reuse the original CV washer and nut on the new CV.
