wheel offset question

i did a search and came up with nothing...

so i have decided to go with level 8 mk6 wheels pictured here:

i know i am going with 17s... but my question is should i do 17x9 w/ a -12mm offset

or

17x8 w/ a -10mm offset

I like a wide stance, but have heard that for some reason, the lugs are shorter up front. I would prefer to not have to replace any wheel studs or anything

for reference, the tire size will be 285s
