Wheel Size for Brake Upgrade - FJ Wheels?

Hey guys,

I've got a 98 4runner with 15" rims. I'm due for new tires and figured this was a good time to consider getting bigger rims so that I can do the Tundra upgrade at some point. I have seen THIS thread and I'm trying to figure out what wheels I should go for.

My buddy next door has an FJ with new rims. But he kept the stock ones. I might see if he'll sell them to me. Not sure if he has the 16s or 17s...

Anyway, can I make basically any 16 work? With possibly some grinding or wheel spacers? Is there anything to consider when changing wheel size on a car? I checked out a tire size converter. Do you just pick the new tire size based on what matches closest to the original? Will I need to recalibrate the speedometer?

Any info is much appreciated.

Just picked up these guys on eBay for $250. Came off a 5th gen. They are 17s. Should look pretty good on my black 3rd gen. I'm assuming they'll fit with e tundra brakes. I hope so. Anyway I've gotta get new tires soon so it'll be fun to get some new wheels on there. The dirty old stock 15s aren't exactly sexy.

Impossible to say, but generally yes, with some grinding or spacers. I used the Tacoma wheel on my 00 because I knew(based on this forum) that it would work. Now I'm looking at some 2011 Tacoma 17" for my 99. I don't want to use spacers or grind.

Is there any particular downside to spacers? Evens small ones?

Yes, especially the small ones. Our wheels are hubcentric, using a 1/4" spacer negates the hub centering. Larger spacers can retain hub centering, but they can be suspect if not high quality units. And no matter what, add stressed not designed in to the parts.

Hey did you ever put the tundra brake upgrade on this while you had it? I have the same wheels on my 3rd gen and i need to upgrade soon. Wondering if these wheels fit the brakes without spacers. If they dont ill just have to buy new rotors and nice pads because i deploy in 2 weeks and will be having my wife drive it while im gone---no time to experiment, tinker, or wait for additional parts in the mail.

If they're 17s you won't have any problems.

If they're 16" refer to the Tundra brake upgrade thread. There's a whole list of wheels there that work or don't.

I just finished clearing 231 tundra calipers and disks on these snowflake rims. They fit with no spacers.
