wheel spacers?

99-4runner

New member
I was thinking of getting these for christmas but my step-dad thinks it will cause ball joints to wear out extreemly fast. has anyone experienced this? would this be a problem for a 99 4runner with the daystar 3"??

Mine's into it's 6 month on my truck and I did my fair share of wheeling..No problems here. Whats the reason for putting the spacers?

purely for looks as of now. eventually I'll go with bigger tires so they would help clear.. but mostly just for looks.

Im assuming since he mentioned daystar he meant a 3" coil spacer to lift the 4runner not a 3" wide wheel spacer. Well i dont think u should have too much trouble from it, so i say u should just get the spacer on there already! haha

I have Allpro 1.5 spacers, been on for over year, and I have had no issues at all, even with some of the 3-4 diamond trails I have been on. Just make sure that you torque them on properly and check the torque again after about 100 miles. Be sure you use threadlock. You should be fine.

I think he meant he is currently or anticipating a 3 inch spacer lift, and he wants to make sure wheel spacers wont cause any damage with the lift.

I've had my spidertrax spacers for over a year...if they're safe from 4 hours of highway driving then 2 days of hardcore wheeling then another 4 hours on the highway, I'd say they're pretty tough.

My 3" daystar lift is already on the rig, I was just curious if the spacers would cause ball joints to wear out at a rapid rate

thats the result of a broken ball joint?!!?

thats not the worst...

Rics 4runner got totalled...

Snowrunners brake line tore if I remember right.

Yeah, do your balljoints no matter what.

but the wheel spacers wont put as much pressure on the ball joints as your lift has already done.

Yes, sir.
Get Toyota ones, NOT aftermarket junk.

Ditto, my lower ball joint already tore so it caused squeaking already. only took 4 months...

Agreed, I paid $320 for both uppers and lowers from the dealership last week.
And I wasn't able to install them yesterday lol so in the next couple weeks I better get them on, though my ball joints are not torn yet. But I'm driving verrry carefully until I get them on. You do not want to ignore your ball joints.

After how many miles should ball joints be replaced?
Is there any advantage/disadvantage to getting a rim with less back spacing (to push the tire out) instead of getting wheel spacers?

I don't know if there's a mileage recommandation to replace the BJs, but I would say about every 7-10 years on a non-lifted 4runner and every 5-7 years on a lifted 4runner. That's just my opinion, no paperwork to back that up.

The advantage of getting wheels with less BSing is some spacers are only lug-centric, meaning they don't have the edge sticking out of the inner hole for the wheel to rest on. This puts all of the stress directly on the lugs instead of that inner ring. If they do have that hub-centric ring (like the Spidertrax and All-pros do), then there really is no disadvantage other than they aren't cheap and may end up costing the same as new wheels. (My Cragar Soft 8s were only ~$65 each and I believe a pair of Spidertrax are $125 + shipping so they're about the same price.

Thanks Brian. New rims it is :p

That would be ideal. But some people (like me) would rather run OEM alloys. And others would rather shell out 200 for spacers than 1500 on new wheels and tires

More than likely I'll need new tires by next summer anyway and I'm finding that more and more shops around here will not put a 285 on a 7 inch rim. I'd way rather save the extra coin, but I want bigger shoes.

Ive got 1.25" lug centric AllPro spacers on all 4 corners. I am pleased with their functionality. However, they cause too much bump steer (wobbling) with the front and are a pain in the butt when I need to service anything that requires taking the tire off cus the spacers have to come off too (replacing seals, bearings, cv axles, etc..) I got them bc the center bores on my aftermarket wheels are too small. I plan to get the bores cut to size or buy new wheels though and ditch the spacers cus I think them being lug centric is causing the bump steer problem. I have heard that spacers cause the wheel bearings to fail a lot sooner, which are not fun to service.
