Wheel terminology

I'm trying to understand wheel terminology.

I was playing around with the wheel/tire comparer.
Stock rims 16x7.5 w/ 0 offset w/ a 265 70 16 has a backspacing 4.2"

So if I wanted to buy a 16x8 and put 285 75 16...I need to buy a rim w/ -6 offset? That equals to 4.2" backspace also.

do you guys know if that is correct?

Obviously the tire is alittle wider so I have to calculate about half an inch...
so I would need to buy 16x8 rims w/ -20 offset...that makes backspacing to 3.7". I'm guessing that should cover the tire hitting the UCA.

Hopefully i'm doing this calculation right...

Backspacing and offset are two different things and a function of the rim width and design.
Backspacing is referenced from the WMS (wheel mounting surface) and inside mounting edge.
Offset is a function of rim width vs centerline.

Does anyone know if this rim will fit w/ a 3" cornfed lift?

I know there is a member here that has no rubbing issue w/ a 16x8 285 tires but w/ a 4.5 backspace.

So these rims will stick out .5 inch...it seems so little but just want to make sure there is going to be no rubbing or does .5inch make a big difference?

i dont know much about offset so somebody will chime in there

but 16x8 with 4.5 inchs or less of backspace will work fine with a 285.

Im going back to a 16x7 4.375 5 star rim just because I like it better, ill be running 1/2 " spacers to accomodate them.
