Wheel & Tire Size Questions

Ok guys, not anything I am doing right now, just curious. Looking into new wheels for the runner and the sizes. When I do this my truck will be lifted, I was looking at Cragar Soft 8's that are 16x7 with 5 inch backspacing, what size tire would I want to get for this? I am new to big tire sizes, used to Honda's with low profiles, lol, so this is new to me. And is that a good spec for the wheels are far as size?

Stock backspacing is 4.5" and the widest tire you can run is a 10.50, anything wider will contact the front upper control arm. I would suggest the 16x7 soft 8s with 4" backspacing, thats what I run on mine with a 285/75 (about a 33x11.50) and I don't have any control arm issues.

Pretty much aren't going to get any better advice than that if your sticking with a 16x7.

is there a benefit of getting 17' over the stock 16? I know it will give you more room for upgrading to 231 calipers, but anything else?

I would change the 7" wide rim to 8" wide before I changed 16" to 17".

I just ordered a set of Tread Wright Howlers. Size is 265/75 r16, there going on a stock 97 4Runner. I checked out a few other threads before ordering them but do think I will have any rub issues? I plan on doing a 1 inch suspension lift in 6-10 months. Also, I'm new to the forum thing, how do I post a new thread? Thanks!

Welcome to the forum.
You kept the stock wheels right? If so, you'll be fine. Expecially after the 1" lift. My concern would be with a retread tire.

can I ask why? I know the 16 gives you more rubber for cushion and airing down, but is there any other reason?

I would like to do the tundra caliper down the road, and I guess the 199mm will work.

also if you happen to get a deal on a set of 17's would it be bad?

The bigger the rim the more expensive the tire. Just keep that in mind also.

Just personal opinion, I think a wider stance for the tires looks better. But for a 265, a 7-7.5" rim is just fine. I run 285's so an 8" rim fits my tires better.

As far as 16" vs. 17", The smaller the rim, the more you can air down offroad. 17's still do very well off road. I wouldn't go larger than 17 though. Also, tires are more expensive for larger rims.

ok next question, the stock back spacing is 4.5 you say, i am doing the tundra caliper upgrade to the biggest ones (213mm i believe), would a 4" backspaced crager soft 8 still clear or no?

Backspacing has nothing to do with how close the inside face of the wheel is to the calipers, BS is just where the flange is positioned. In other words, my 16x7 4" BS Cragar Soft 8s push my tires out ~.5" farther than my stock wheels, but the Cragars still don't even clear my stock calipers without spacers. Quicksilvr has the same wheels and his just barely clear his stock calipers without spacers (probably due to small variations in caliper size between years or maybe aftermarket calipers are slightly bigger/smaller). So the answer is definitely NO, you will not clear Tundra brakes with those Cragar Soft 8s unless you get spacers. I'd recommend Spidertrax 1.25" spracers.

I wouldn't bother doing spacers on the back personally for a few reasons. I know on my truck, they would prohibit my rear tires from stuffing because the tires will hit the outer edger of the rear fenders. You can save $$ by buying only one set of spacers instead of 2. Your stance up front is still wider (where most of the weight is) so you'll still have better stability and a lower COG. The only "bad" thing would be that your front and rear wdths would be different, but I have a 2" difference overall and it doesn't bother me at all. I really don't even notice it whatsoever.

You can get away with running the 199mm calipers with the Soft 8's, thats the route I went and I love the way it stops now. I had to grind the caliper down a little, about 3/16", but I'm not running a spacer I'm sure it would have fit with a small spacer.

I can't say for sure but I think the Wheelers Off Road wheels will fit but IMO they are no where near as atractive as the Soft 8's.

i have a 3inch lift and just put 285/75/16s on a 16x8 wheel with 3 5/8 bs and i rubbed had to trim lower corners of bumber (about a 1/2 inch) not sure on your setup but i think the backspacing is what did me in for trimming:toilet::toilet:

Oh okay well I think I'm gunna buy a OL bumper so I don't think I will have any.

4.5" backspacing with that size tire will rub the hell out of the front upper control arms. No offense but did you rear this thread? The very first post tells you that.
