Wheel width question - TRD vs FN Pro etc

Hi all,

I'm currently shopping for a used 2017-2018 SR5 and have really no experience with aftermarket tires and wheels. I'm almost exclusively a city/highway driver, although I do want to get some new wheels and tires on the new truck, along with possibly a very small lift. Something that looks a bit better than stock, of course, but doesn't totally kill the mpg or nice ride.

I see the biggest knock on the TRD wheels is that they are only 7" wide, where as the similar looking FN wheels are wider. Do I care about width if I'm not going to big AT offroad tires? I'm still researching the tires, so don't have anything specific in mind, but guessing I'll be in the smaller end because of my driving habits? Or does a 7.5-8" width open up more options for me?

I don't think it will make that much of a difference based on what you're saying. If you are getting smaller tires you are probably best on the TRD.
My advice if you don't mind is figure out what tires you want in the end, and start building to that. you don't want to have to buy tires in 6 months!

Also keep in mind that the FN Pros don't have the stubby center cap so they look slightly different.

I guess it all depends on how much you want to spend. I think putting an aggressive off-road tire same size as stock would be all you need if you have a 1 or 2 inch lift.

If you want the tires to sit out wider, then you would need to put new wheels on it (you could put spacers instead but have a professional put them on if you decide to go that route but search for spacer topics before you decide). Icon Rebound wheels have a 0 offset and 4.75 backspace which will increase the overall width of the stance but pretty costly, usually around $220 per wheel. You probably would be ok then putting 275/70/17 tires on it without having to do any fender liner modifications. That would look really good though. And the fender liner mods are easy.

If you want just a little bit wider than the Icons you can put SCS wheels on it which have a -10 offset and 4.3 inch backspace. Because of the wider stance of those wheels you may have to do some minor fender liner modifications to keep it from rubbing if you put 275's on it but maybe not depending on the lift you get. SCS wheels are less expensive than Icons and are lighter and are made specifically for Toyota's which means they are hub centric (fit like a glove). That's what I put on my 4Runner. Very happy with them so far.

Id probably do the FNs if you want to do any kind of raising in the future. Not that they don't look good at stock height. But if you go that route they seem to pair better with bigger tires. Just my opinion tho.
