I'm spending a long weekend in grand lake and want to find some trails to wheel. I've been searching the web and all i can find are atv trails that say they may not be open to vehicles. I'm in our offroad xterra, so running a locker and 33s so more than a leisurely drive but nothing extreme. any one have any good places they go? map, directions, all would be helpful.

My guidebook lists North Supply Creek trail as just up the road from Grand Lake. Take 34N, then F.S. 491W (opposite Kawuneeche Visitor Center). Left on F.S. 492 shortly, then one more left in about a half mile. There should be a trailhead parking lot with info board just ahead. I haven't been there, but it's listed as "Moderate" (mid-level)--rough and rocky, but doable in a stock high-clearance 4WD SUV. They also list Stillwater Pass Rd. as a scenic, fairly easy route--it's south of Grand Lake, down 34, then right (W) on County Rd. 4. Lots of mountain views, ending at Hwy. 125. There's another one listed in the area, but it doesn't appear to connect to 34--Baker Pass, west of Ft. Collins and south of Gould. Best of luck, and have fun out there!

Just north of Winter Park coming off of Hwy 40, to the east, is a road called Rollins Pass - County Rd 80 - NF 149 (different designations for the same road) should be a great ride taking you up to the top of Rollins Pass (12000') where a narrow gauge railroad ran through a tunnel which has since collapsed blocking the road heading back down to Rollinsville. Check Mapquest for Winter Park and scroll to the east. Should be a great drive, I have done it from the other side of the pass and the area is very scenic. You should be there in the fall - - spectacular!

I'm sure you've heard them mentioned here before--Charles Wells's comprehensive guidebooks put out by Funtreks. He personally drives every trail, then gives his personal description, plus pics, GPS coordinates, detailed maps, directions to get there, services nearby--basically everything you need to determine if a trail is right for your vehicle, and how to get there and back. Great references!

surprisingly enough half the trails are on hwy 4, and we are staying on hwy4....took a trip up the road and its blocked off a ways up for logging. we peeled off a few paths that said they were passes...but ended up being blocked off and turned into 4wheeler paths. thanks all for the suggestions.
