Info on rayhouse road: it's AKA "road 40". I tried finding its entrance off of highway 16 at night once as a short cut to Knoxville area. Had a hell of a time. And it was gated closed.
After that I did some more research and turns out there is some bridge that is no longer maintained so from what I've read it's closed to vehicles (thanks California). However, that road (if connected) does turn into Reiff Road and that half is accessible from what I've read.

Pretty much what I'm saying, that idea is a gamble. Either try finding it via highway 16 during the day, or go AAAALLLLLLLL the way around by Berryessa to get to Reiff road. If I had more free time I'd go out and investigate since I'm the closest to the Berryessa access. It's on my to-do list but day time free time is limited. Hopefully not for much longer.

OK, so Knoxville doesnt sound too popular - but I am not sure about open options. I was checking out the Forest Service's website today and noticed it says dirt roads / trails are closed till spring (which is pretty much most of the list)... Anyone know for sure? I will see if I can call a ranger station tomorrow to confirm. Stay tuned.


** 2/21/2018 Update **
I spoke to a FS Ranger station and confirmed I was reading their info correctly... Most of the ideas I threw out above on FS land are closed for season... so that rules out most of my list. :sad:

I called BLM and the guy I spoke with said he wasnt aware of any closures (and said any would be posted to their site... which I looked on and didnt see any). So... back to drawing board...

I just got back from a trip to the high lakes area above Paradise, east of Chico. It might be a bit of a drive for some but there are lots of excellent places to wheel. If there is snow, thats an added bonus. There are a couple ways to get there. East on hwy 32 out of Chico or up Skyway out of Paradise. The Bambi Inn is a cool bar/restaurant that makes for a good meeting place coming up from Chico. Cabins are available to rent as well. Here is their address

It is the same. Yes it’s open. Many a couple more inches of snow in the past week. Pats98 has obviously been up more recently then I have. As far as condition he’d know more than me. I saw Pats98 cruise past my work. Nice rig :thumb3:
 
Was at Knoxville area this weekend...nice and open. Good 15-20miles of trails. This weekend was pretty dry, except few mud holes, but it's supposed to rain tomorrow so might get some mud.
Knoxville is mostly fire trails, but there are some smaller narlier trails off the devil head road.

Cow mountain is fun too, but in my opinion I liked Knoxville better. Cow mountain is an actual off road park and it's often closed .
 
I’m planning on going back up to the high lakes this coming Monday. It’s supposed to snow more up there, which in my opinion makes it more fun. I will post up some pics when I get back.

Cool. Your other pictures make it look nice.

How difficult is the trail? (Trail.com says "difficult" but not sure what that translates to.) How much does snow add to the difficulty?

I've got a 3/2 lift on 32's running open diff's with some armor underneath. The pictures you posted up look like folks are running a bit more built rigs than I have ... just concerned this might be a bit more than I can tackle.
 
The trail isn’t difficult, the group I was with had quite a few vehicles with 33’s and smaller tires. We used to go up all the time with stockish/mildly built rigs. There are a lot of spots to check out and I think it’s worth the drive.
 
All - thanks for the input / suggestions. I think [MENTION=120981]Pats98[/MENTION] suggestion of High Lakes Drive sounds like a winner to me. So, thats what I'll go with. Ill post of some additional details in a bit.

OK, here are the details for the Sat. 3/3/2018 trip. It should be a good time.


Trail: High Lakes Drive (thanks again [MENTION=120981]Pats98[/MENTION] for the reco)

Meet up location: Dutch Bro's Coffee (6901 Skyway, Paradise, CA 95969) Java Express: 6840 Skyway, Paradise, CA 95969

Gas up in/near Paradise before meeting up

Meet up Time: 8:15am
(Yes, I know that is early given most of us have a 2-3 Hrs drive to get there... but want to get to the trails with plenty of daylight)

Depart for Trails: 8:30am

Plan to be out all day


It probably goes without saying but bring your
- recovery gear
- air compressor / means to air up tires
- food (will be out all day)
- water
- communications
- maps
- What ever else you normally wheel with (fluids, spares, etc.)
Also consider bringing cold weather / snow gear / change of clothes as the 10 day shows a good chance of precip Wed. past Sat. so expect rain and snow.

Totally down to go but I will be busy with one of the last few tournaments for my sons wrestling. Keep me posted if there are any future trips after mid-march.
 
Dammit, sat n sun are my sleep in days! Would really like to go there, never been there yet.
Besides, this glorified pavement princess needs to try out some real snow before her slippers start loosening it.
