Wheels: Smaller Rim Better?

Just been doing some research here. Trying to figure out the best route to go with my 2008 Urban Runner for tires.

I just replaced my XREAS with 5100's. Stock springs for now and it's leveled. Stock, the front is lowered. It rides much better and more like a truck.

I still have my stock tires and rims etc at 50K. I want to upgrade.

I think the stock rims are 18in? For the Urban Runners? I need to look for sure. But it seems like people just straight trade these out for 16in FJ rims/wheels..

Are there better options going with the FJ rims at 16in ? I mean obviously you get more tire that way.

Do the FJ rims pop right on? I really want some BFG A/T's but I don't think there are many options for 18in.

There's some FJ wheels on my local craigslist for 450. Tires need replacing but rims are there...

These are on my local craigslist. They're cheap and look badass! Haven't seen many of this version of the FJ tire on 4th Gen's though.

The price is nice too. Too bad there isn't a 5th. And it's black.

Will these fit on an Urban Runner? (i'm imagining that its the SE rotor size)

If you have the larger brakes the smallest size wheel that you could go would be a 17".

IMO there are 2 reasons to favor smaller rims (16" or 17") vs bigger (18 or 20.)

1. Tires are much less expensive for smaller rim sizes, generally speaking, and

2. If you go off road, smaller rim = bigger footprint when you air down.

On a personal note, I absolutely HATE the 'wagon wheel' look of big rims. Yeah, I get it, it's the 'fashion' these days but IMO it looks ridiculous and I'm sure the ride is horrible (not to mention the fact that you can destroy that expensive rim by hitting a curb too hard.)

I've seen some stupid automotive "fashion" trends over the past 40 years or so (anybody remember those "multi-blade windshield wipers" that were popular in the 80's?) but "wagon wheels" has to be one of the dumbest ones I've seen.

First set of rims (steel) make for good off-road beaters as they are of course made of steel and banging them up doesn't really matter.

The latter two 17" sets I have owned and can tell you that the FJ stock (5 spoke) rims weigh less than the 8 hole type (5th gen TE silver rims). Other than that, it's personal aesthetic preference.

I'm fairly certain the Urban Runner has the larger brake rotor considering it's a Sport Edition and can only go as small as 17" on the wheel diameter.

This is why I'm glad I purchased the SR5... 16" wheels fit and no XREAS to remove.

I do recommend 17" wheels and suggest finding ones you like looking at.

I've always liked steelies.

If you get 5 you can do a 5 wheel rotation.

I would say the worst is probably the giant wings, and other stupid mods put onto fuel economic sedans and what not. But the worst is camber, which is exponential with those stretched tires. Anyway, OP, they both have their pros and cons, pros being what [MENTION=45517]Martinjmpr[/MENTION] said, but a pro of the bigger wheels is bigger brakes.
