Hello.I have recently noticed a supercharger like sound when accelerating and withing past week it has been louder and more noticeable.I opened the hood but there is no supercharger)))Jk.

Its a 2006 sport V8,timing belt was changed 5 years ago at 95k,now its 140 k him.

The sound is coming from top of the engine or from where the fan is...

what could be the issue in my case?

i recently moved to Tampa Bay area and dont know anyone who could take a look at it...If you know good mechanics, id be glad to meet them)))

Thank you.

Perhaps it's the fan clutch stuck on, although that's more of a whoosh/roar

Could be the usual idler, alternator, PAS pump etc bearings.

You can use a screwdriver like a stethoscope and try to pinpoint it. Watch out for moving parts etc.

id asume its not the fan clutch because air flow and temperature that is coming out of vents is normal,AC is cool and no noise when driving hight speeds.

thank you for your input,Other things to consider for sure.

The fan clutch has nothing to do with your HVAC system and shouldn't affect the air coming out of your vents (most of the time but if it's really bad it can), the fan clutch is on the cooling fan that pulls air through the radiator and if defective can cause the fan to make abnormal sounds, usually on our T4Rs if the clutch is going bad it is because it has lost some of the oil inside the clutch, it can be removed easily taken apart and refilled with new oil or you can replace it with a new clutch.

Since you say it doesn't make the sound at higher speeds so it's possibly not your issue but checking the clutch would be worth doing.

You can check it by trying to spin the fan by hand with the engine not running, it should turn with some moderate resistant but not be able to free wheel or be extremely hard to turn.

ill do that in 30 mins...

thank you for the input.
what did you mean by using a screw driver as stethoscope,in a first reply.

thank you

Using a long screwdriver or even a stick such as a broom handle can be used as a mechanic's stethoscope by putting one end on a area of the engine and press/cup the handle or side of the stick against your ear, the sounds will be amplified so you can discern better and pinpoint if it's an abnormal sound or not, but you can also buy a mechanic's stethoscope at your local auto parts store for $10 or less and it's much easier to use and a bit safer, anyone who does some of their own automotive work should have one in their tool box to help trouble shoot unusual noises.

BUT as noted be very careful of ALL moving parts when doing this!!!

checked the fan ,spins normal, seems like the sound is coming from left part of the bay where the belt spins.

thank you for stethoscope suggestion))

Idler pulley, Alternator pulley...those have an occasional whine that "could" be a sound like a SC...have you bypassed your SAIP by chance?

i am not sure what SAIP is. i havent bypassed anything))))

the sound is most likely coming from a power steering pump pulley...the steering wheel works fine.Fluids are all leveled.

Thank you for all your inputs.

SAIP is the Secondary Air Injection Pump.....but usually when the pump starts going bad you hear a "Shop Vac" sound on start up and then it goes away after a few minutes, if the pump goes out completely then the engine goes into "limp mode" and will not run well enough to drive it, what happens is the vanes on the plastic impeller break off and get stuck in the air injection openings and they get stuck open.

The purpose of the SAIP is to pump fresh air into the exhaust to to lower the number of carbon emissions coming out of the exhaust.

The pump going bad is a somewhat common issue on some Toyotas and many will "bypass: the system so they don't end up stuck with it in "limp mode" and also once the pump goes bad you can't easily bypass it and have to get a new pump installed which can be costly on some models.

Slight thread hijack - is this system only on the V8s?

My brother's FJ did the same thing for a while, it was the alternator. As far as I remember it was only the first few minutes of a drive it would make that noise.

mine was making noise with accelaration.more rpms= louder.

it was alternator ......

thank you for such a great explanation of SIAP...How do i bypass it?
am i able to do it myself?i have slight experience with cars....

I don't know how to do the bypass without purchasing a bypass kit which are easy to install, there are at least 3 that I know of, I can't remember all of them right now but I do know that a member of this forum sells the least expensive of the 3, I will mention him.... slyfox75 which should get his attention to this reply, you can also sent him a PM by visiting his profile (just click on his username that I typed to go to his profile), also here are 2 link to topics that discuss the SAIP issue and the bypasses, both were started back in 2014 and one is still active but quite long (34 pages) to read in it's entirety but has good info on all of the bypass kits available, the second topic is much shorter (6 pages), but if you want as much knowledge on the SAIP system and how to bypass it I would read them both.

awesome,thank you very much....
i think i got his bypass,it was long ago, about 5-6 years ago when i was making wheel well flaps and we exchanged on it,i gave him flaps and he gave me bypass,i didnt pay attention to it back then but i guess i need to find it and use it.
thank you very much for great info you provided.Much appreciated.
