Friend is telling me next year and that we need to buy another right now while they still have the 4.0
When does the 4Runner get the 3.5 and crappy transmission that the Tacoma has?

Not until there is a redesign which is who knows when and no one know what engine options will be offered. The 4.0 in the older Jeep is an incredible engine. When they swapped to the minivan V6 in 2007 is was a huge failure. The newer Pentastar V6 is a beast though, makes great power and is very reliable. Let's hope there is a V8 option in the 6th gen 4Runner.

Friend indicated that Toyota dealer was saying that the 3.5 was coming for the 4Runner next year. Then again, I trust a dealer about as much as I trust gas station sushi. This friend dumped his Taco with Icon 5 right at 99K miles because he was panicking over the depreciation hit when it actually hit the magical 100K. He likes to stay in the new car phase and thus churns through cars. We already have 157K on our 2014 and he was pushing me to trade it in while they still have the 4.0. I told him that I'd just buy another with a 4.0 and keep the existing.

Not gonna happen, we’re more likely to get a 6 speed transmission than the 3.5L engine. Tacoma never got the dual CVVT 4.0 in the 4Runner, FJ.

Is your friend a Toyota salesperson? 4R sales might be off at his dealership.
Threatening people with a 3rd Gen Tacoma engine/tranny would scare up some 4R sales.

V8 will never happen again in a 4runner. It competes with the Lexus gx460. That was the reason it was dropped from the 4runner.
Not everyone thinks the 3.5 garbage. Never had an issue with the 3.5

The power numbers on the 3.5 aren't bad, a little more HP and a little less torque. The problem is the transmission searching for gears. I also heard that you can give the 3.5 a tune for about $500 and increase the performance. This is a 3rd party tune, not by Toyota.
Also weight additions to the Taco such as a lift, steel bumpers, winch, etc... really bog it down. Solution there is to replace the gears for a higher ratio. Expensive though.

The only thing that causing me concern is the new Hyundai Palisades. Still waiting for the new gen 4runner to come out before deciding.
My son just recently switched his 2015 Camry xse for a 2019 Santa Fe ultimate and the features are on par or better than a 2019 RAV4 limited for about 4k less. Looking at the features of the Palisades and comparing to a Highlander platinum or 4runner limited, Toyota will need to up the game.
I know comparing a 4runner to a unibody suv it's not the same but now having a tundra platinum the requirements are not there to keep looking at bof.
Have to see what the fallout is going to be after the next gen announcement

This is bs. You can't say that emissions regs are why Toyota puts boring powertrains in their cars when you know full well that other automakers are doing just fine making exciting powertrains under the exact same regulatory conditions... the blame falls squarely on Toyota and their customers (you and me) because clearly we're willing to buy their vehicles.

3.5 is a great engine, it just doesn't belong in a truck or SUV Makes ZERO power down low and is gutless until 4000+ RPM in the 3rd gen Tacoma. Got rid of my 3rd gen Tacoma after 3500 miles, couldn't take it. If Toyota is stupid enough to put that engine and tranny combo in the 6th gen 4Runner, our 5th gen 4Runner value will go through the roof.

Well the good thing about the refreshed Taco is it is good R&D (beta testing) for the next generation 4Runner. I have a feeling the Goodyear Duratrac highway ("highway" my name) tires will be included in the TRD Off-Road 4Runner. If you watch some YouTube video the traction off-road is poor, although I guess you won't have any side blowouts.

For everyone who is wanting big power engines in the 4Runner keep this in mind, part of why the resale is so high is because there isn't enough power to abuse/break parts like other rigs.
More power = less dependable long term = lower resale

Toyota already makes a V8 4Runner, it's called the GX. There is nothing stopping them from putting a tuned, more powerful version of that drivetrain in the current or next 4Runner. Nothing. For those of you who like to have shit power from the 4.0 V6, they can make it an 3000 dollar option and you're more than welcome to buy the gutless engine.
Toyota, like many carmakers, bet on the wrong horse. They thought that by now we'd be balls deep in a Democrat administration where some New Yorker or Californian Car Czar who has never owned a car, doesn't know how to drive, and only ridden in stinky Ubers driven by terrorists and rapists would be demanding that average manufacturer fleet MPG be 55, no V8s, no diesels, and a tax on large displacement engines.
That didn't happen, so get rid of the tiny gutless engines that can't generate hp or torque below 2000 rpm, unleash some Lexus V8s, and FFS DO NOT give us a turbo. Even the cRaptor is coming out with a NA V8.
BTW, the reason I didn't buy the GX is that Toyota refuses to update it to the new Prado that has been out for a while internationally, it also looks like a Yautja that is about to put the beatdown on some former US governors.

All the complaining when the important factor is also that there were over 100k of these "underpowered" rigs each of the last several years. Toyota has no reason to fix something that isn't broken.

This seems most logical as you said. Now my question is, will this be more of a refresh or complete redesign? I thought the TNGA F platform is not ready quite yet and if the 4R is debuting next year, I’m thinking refresh Powertrain on same existing chassis. Perhaps TNGA F in 2023 or so. I wonder if the new 8sp auto will make up for the loss in torque of the 3.5 V6? I know when Lexus switched from the 6 to the 8speed in some of their sedans (IS &GS) it made little improvement in efficiency and virtually no performance benefit. Hopefully they get the gearing and programming right!
