Thanks Thai,you took the words from my mouth but I had a feeling he was talking diesel since none of those trucks with gas engines ever see much over 11-14mpgs in the city.

The real issue is SUVs are shaped like bricks and even the smallish SUVs like Highlanders don't get much better than 20mpg around town.

My friend's Silverado gasser gets around 16 mpg on the highway! And he is a traveling doctor...so, he is hurting badly nowadays!! :moon: He told me today that he filled up with $95 worth of gas yesterday...and his truck was not full!

But those are diesels, right?? Did i miss something here? You put a diesel into a 4runner and it will get high-20's, low-30's everyday! Check out what Mercedes ML diesel gets...and the 4runner should be around that.

Now, the gasoline version of those trucks gets SIGNIFICANTLY worst fuel economy than the 4runner. You need to compare a modern 4runner vs. a modern gasoline fullsize truck. Apple to apple.

Now, the fact that a gasoline 5th gen 4runner can come close to a "proper" diesel truck in fuel economy is pretty good in my book.

Yes your correct, on a different not the new ecoboost ford motor should be getting good good MPG. the 4runner would do good with a diesel motor, toyota just didnt pick the right one, theres does 25 Imperial MPG which is like 21mpg US.

The closest Ford competitor to the 4runner is the unibody Explorer. And the 2011 Explorer AWD gets 17/23/19 combined EPA. This is with their 3.5L V6 (smaller engine) with 6-speed auto (again, advantage over 4runner). Yet, it still about the same as the 5th gen 4runner. Curb weight is about the same. YET, despite all this going for the Explorer, the 5th gen 4runner achieves the same fuel economy!

Now, if you want to talk about Ecoboost, then you have to go to the Ford Flex. Here, again, the EPA ratings for the Flex with 3.5L V6 is 16/22 (AWD). With the Ecoboost engine, you're at 16/21 (AWD). Flex curb weight is about 200 or so lbs more than 4runner.

Remember, Ecoboost was made to achieve V8 power with V6 efficiency. It was NOT advertised as V8 power with 4-cyl efficiency! And, power is really not a big issue with the 5th gen 4runner since it can hang in acceleration with Flex and Explorer, with or without Ecoboost.

As for the Toyota diesel used in the Prado overseas, this is what i found:

"the turbo-diesel engine lists a fuel consumption figure of 8.5 l/100km in automatic guise, and 8.8 l/100km when paired with the manual transmission."

Not sure how those numbers add up to EPA ratings....

EDIT: from brief googling, 8.5 L/100km is equal to about 33 mpg. That is not half bad!!

Oil prices plunge below $100 a barrel. It was $114 last week to $99 Thurs, and in Europe it fell to $97/barrel.

I think my 4Runner will not be in craigslist this year:cheers:

Oil prices plunge below $100 a barrel. It was $114 last week to $99 Thurs, and in Europe it fell to $97/barrel.

That does not mean it will stay that low. Also in the past when the price of a barrel of oil dropped they still kept the price of gas high. More profit for them.

The last time we were well over $4/gal in parts of the country the cost of oil was actually less per barrel then it was a few months ago and the price didn't jump as high fortunatly and at least in Denver regular is hovering in the $3.60 mark. Gas prices will rise a bit more as summer approaches and then fall back off in the fall as they always do but the question is how far will they drop as we might not see under $3/gal again but who could've guessed we would've had they reprieve when prices went below the $2 mark.
I remember filling my truck up for about $23 but now the reality is about $53ish at the moment.

I've now been in my 5th for almost a full year. There's no way I'd consider selling this truck. It averages about 22-24 mpg (cruising range of 400 miles, typically) and I am very happy with that. I'm 6'4. It's comfortable, holds my scuba gear with ease, and with the smartkey - it literally 'lights up' when I return to it, as if to say "Welcome back!"

And to note that gas prices have settled and so far nobody is any closer to worrying about having to sell their 4Runners.

For the record I've bene paying around $3.60 which still sucks.

I was paying $4.20-$4.50 for the past few weeks, i think you'll survive.

Sometimes you just need to have a large 4x4. Driving to work in the snow, towing and hauling, I might keep the 4runner and get an econobox for commuting if things got REAL bad.
