When to replace gas cap?

How do I know when to replace the gas cap gasket or the whole gas cap for my 85 4-Runner?I mean what symptoms would have to be present to replace it.Thanks in advance.

On an 85 (that's one that I own), I don't know that it really makes a difference. On newer models, if it's bad it will set a check engine light. I've owned mine for 5 years now, and it's got almost 200,000miles on it, and as far as I know it hasn't been replaced. I guess if it looks rough around the sealing surface, I would replace it, but other than that, I think it should be okay.

If anyone has other info. on this please post...

yes once on my 93 I did not click the cap and it caused a CEL got out and tightened it no more CEL.
Mine is the original. I would not worry to much about it unless you get a CEL.
