When will a 4runner roll?

If you had to take extremely evasive maneuvers, at about what MPH would you have to worry about rolling a 4runner.... if you had to slam on the brakes and turn the wheel as hard as you could, almost doing a U-turn.

What about on one with a 2/1 lift?

Too many variables to pinpoint an exact MPH. It should be difficult to roll a 4Runner with the VSC enabled...but obviously not impossible.

And yes, lifting will raise the center of gravity, which will have an effect on stability.

I see the difference with the lift. I have 3/2 cornfed lift. I can feel the "un-stableness" on the freeway with high wind.

I always remind myself. The 4runner is not a race car.

One important thing to always remember in a panic situation is to sit on the brakes. Slam on the brakes BEFORE you turn and no car with ABS will lose control. You won't even trigger VSC.

Try it in a car in a parking lot. If you turn then brake, you will lose it. If you brake then turn, you never will.

That was the kind of info I was looking for. Thank you.

The higher it is the easier it would be to roll. Hard to tell with speed. VSC wont have anything to do with not rolling over , it might help to keep you on track so that the chances are slimmer , but it won't prevent it.

Well obviously if you are higher you will roll easier. Otherwise SUVS would handle like cars. I was just curious if there was a certain point that the 4runners' handling gives out, causing them to roll.

In order to roll over, the vehicle has to begin turning sideways. VSC helps prevent that from happening in the first place, so to say that VSC will not have anything to do with not rolling over is wrong.

I'm not saying that it is impossible to roll a vehicle with VSC, I'm just saying that it is much easier to roll a vehicle that doesn't have VSC than one with VSC.

Try it see if it helps .

Like I said "it might help you on track so that the chances are slimmer , but it wont prevent it".

VSC does prevent rollovers because it stabilizes the vehicle in an emergency maneuver AND it dethrottles you. Therefore, VSC slows down the vehicle. Of course, there is always those side curtain airbags to cushion your roll. :)

Yeah, okay.... like I'm gonna risk my safety and my 4Runner by trying to roll it just to prove you wrong.

Falls, sometimes you remind me of an old grandpa who just hates technology and refuses to believe that it can make anything better. If you want to believe that VSC doesn't help mitigate the risk of a rollover, then I doubt anything will change your mind. Unless of course you find yourself in a hairy situation with your 4Runner where the VSC helps save your ass. But even then, you'd probably just think it was your superior driving skills that saved you....

BTW, the front driveshaft of my 4wd 4Runner still doesn't turn when I'm not in 4wd HI or 4wd LOW;)

Here's an excellent study on VSC and SUV rollovers.

http://www-personal.umich.edu/~hpeng/SAE2001_yigit_1211_2000.PDF

An excerpt from their conclusion:

The results we have obtained in our study have two main messages. First, Vehicle Stability Control system is an important product that can improve vehicle stability against rollovers, especially for SUVs...... Having VSC has a dramatic impact on the roll behavior of Vehicle A. It elevates the vehicle's resistance to rollover.

I was horsing around with you , by NO means was I intending that you try something to hurt yourself or any others .....sorry

I would be curious to see/drive drive stock vehicle vs a lifted one just to feel the seat of the pants difference in how much the higher center of gravity feels.

Im sure that helps with the roll over , but damn everytime we see a snowstorm here its not uncommon to see on the news SUV over in the ditch , almost seems like the media focuses in them. I'm sure its the crowd that thinks I have 4wd and am immune to anything.

I have a 2.5: lift, and feel almost no difference at all, but that MAY be because I also have wheel spacers...that would make it more stable right?

Yep, wider stance = more stability. You know how line backers crouch down with their legs spread? Well picture what would happen if one team decided to stand with their legs close together......No bueno.

I would have to agree . Wheel spacers , wider wheels , different offset like Even Steven has with his FJ rims that all would help with lifted stability.

thats what I figured...I still corner just as well...I got the wheel spacers for $100 so i was like ehh why not?

I know , I know , I'm old school but just will NEVER run wheel spacers on anything. The look it gives is great , but I would rather spend the money and get different rims.

Not saying they are bad , they just scare me and don't trust them.
