Where Are These Systems Located?

***Attention 3rd Gen Gurus***

I recently purchased a 2002 Sport SR5 with the sole purpose of converting to diesel.

I'll be removing the V6 and auto transmission and installing a R150F manual transmission and a VW BEW TDI engine.

There are a few systems on the 4runner that I don't want to lose in the process, but I don't fully understand where they are in the truck. I'm interested in retaining the following

• Multi-mode 4wd
• ABS
• A-TRAC
• VSC

If I completely remove the engine ECU on the 4runner will I lose these? Also, does the 02 sport transfer case bolt up to the R150F?

I'm no Expert but since no one else chimed in, I think removing the ecu would cause most of those systems from a software standpoint to disappear. You'd have some of the hardware left, but zero software to control it. :cowboy:

Have you looked into the Hilux turbo diesel motor? That's the route I would be going, personally.

I don't know how the multi-mode 4WD works, but there's at least a chance of retaining ABS, TRAC, and VSC. In the 2001-2002 models, there is a separate ECU located near the driver's left foot that controls these functions.

You'd have to look at the wiring diagrams a little closer to see if it merely collects the information from various sensors to report to the engine ECU, or if it is actually in control of those functions. My guess is the latter. The service manual linked to on one of the sticky posts in this forum has the diagrams at the end of it.

I can get more power for less $$ from the BEW motor. Plus, I'm very familiar with VW diesel, and parts are readily available at every auto part store in the USA. I'm looking at 220hp/400ft lbs when the motor is ready for transplant.

Hell yea, this is the information I was looking to get. Thank you kindly. Now I know where to start.

No problem. Only reason I know this is because that box quit working on me and all those systems stopped working (and the speedometer/odometer). Multi-mode and 4WD still function as normal though.

Let us know what you find out and how this goes.
