Where are you downloading music from?

hey all,

For EONS, I've been downloading music from file sharing software but haven't downloaded anything in about 3 years. The songs usually don't sound very good and sometimes have "strange noises" in them. Because it was free, I really didn't care. Lately I've been wanting much better quality (and wary of getting viruses from Kazaa, Limewire, etc). Anyway, iTunes is pretty much the norm now. Where do you guys download your music from? I've been hesitant on iTunes b/c they are very proprietary. If I decide to get a Droid or whatever, I'm afraid I'd be screwed.

I always have had antivirus and all that on my computer so I always used Lime wire. But I think they shut down lime wire so now I use Frost wire I wouldn't recommend either w/o antivirus software.

I used WinMx several years ago, but have not done anything since then. My laptop is just two years old and I don't want it getting infected with anything.


P.S. My son uses iTunes.....but it is expensive!

Music Downloads

Bittorrent sites are you're best bet. I always start here http://torrentz.eu/ but there's many others out there. This one is more of a search engine of bittorrents.

pirate bay or other various bt sites, or mirc via ftp if you know what's up, that's usually the safest way , other then that if you got a droid phone there's an app called simply "mp3 music download" and you can pretty much d/l any song you want for free from there and not worry about it, then copy from your phone to your computer if you wish.

If your concerned about FBI showing up at your door, find what ever song you want on youtube then copy and paste the link into Listen to Youtube and that will rip the song either to a high or normal quality for you to download.

I found about about this a few weeks ago. What a great site. You just have to make sure it's a good Youtube video, but other than that it works really well.

I've been hesitant on iTunes b/c they are very proprietary.

You mentioned iTunes (Satan) which suggests you don't rule out paying.

In that case, Amazon.

mp3 rocket dot com. Works really well, and transfers to itunes library automatically.
My windows firewall hates though lately. Use to be easy to relaunch, but lately can't seem to add new stuff.

Warning

Theres Bear share, limewire, azureus, utorrent, shareaza,Bit Tornado, kazaa..many more. These are torrent clients which will download torrent files through a file sharing site. Though it will take time to prove in court, these are still illegal. Sharing is legal if you can trace the source and you are in a group/orgnization that bought the file. Thats why in order to use private trackers you are going to register. But since anybody can seed, and anybody can download its where copy right is violated. The Piratebay was busted last 2007, their files are not in Sweden LOL! so it will take time for investigators to prove that.

BUT.. A FEDERAL AGENT can pose as one of the SEEDERS noting down your IP. Sending an ID request from your Internet provider. Many have received warnings from internet provider itself. While your ID in the hands of an agent, you're under surveilance(remote). Though you are firewalled etc, a torrent activity can still be detected. If you continue, then a warrant is served.

There are softwares like Peer Guardian, it is based on blacklist to protect you from government penetration but not guaranteed. And if you have hide your IP or change IP etc..I can break it so easy..how much more for those hardcore copy right agents?

IMO a safer way of downloading music is getting a link from a Direct Download Site. It will post a link, and point you to a file bank such as Rapidshare. In this case, you don't get the warning, they will have to do a Takedown request in the file storage site. The website where you got the link will just walk away clean saying.."We don't host files here" and you the downloader..well the connection is safe, the file site secures it.

I do the youtube thing that was mentioned. Only problem I have with it is finding good quality sounding videos sometimes. This is usually if it's not a well known band or something and there aren't many videos for the song. Have not tried the site that was linked. The one I've been using copies it right as it sounds from youtube.

I used to use usenet and newsgroups, but only people with computer knowledge used those. The feds are shutting them down anyway though.

I've gone all the way legal now, and only use amazon.com They are DRM free, and they download as .mp3s. Yes please.

Agree, this happened to me. Sony notified our ISP that 'someone' had illegally downloaded 'Eat Pray Love'. All the bad ass movies I download and THIS is the one they shut us off for?!

Anyways, with piratebay the law does have trackers in new release popular torrents and they simply track you to your IP thus to your ISP then they shut down your internet. In most cases it is merely temporary, but for most, it is enough to scare them out of doing it again. It was more of a hassle if anything to me. So no I use my tethered internet from 3G off my iphone to download a torrent for maybe 2-5% to throw off the trail of my IP then back onto our wifi for a faster connection. Works every time.

How do you get those codes?

Some of the ones for my classes have been as high as $90.

I'd look into running your torrents through a proxy or changing to usenet/newsgroups. And if i was doing that, i'd make damn sure that i was using SSL encryption. The only thing they feds would know would be you are connected to a usenet server, but the contents of your stream would be encryption and SSL is serious encryption.

I know your still in school, but, if you get slammed with a lawsuit, not only would you be royally ****ed, but the lawsuit can extend to your parents and family to pay the damages. Just something to think about.

I used to do a lot of things on the internet, that are wayyy against the law. I'm a computer engineer by the way. Anyway, once i had a serious girlfriend, my own place, a bulldog, and real bills to pay. I realized that getting caught in a lawsuit would really **** up my perfect life. It's not worth it man. Anyway, that is my .02 cents. Do what you want.
