Where can I get a high quality rebuilt 22RE for my 1987 4Runner?

I have a 1987 4Runner 4X4 22RE manual transmission that I have had in storage for years. I tossed the motor years ago due to my own stupidity but smartly I held on the the truck. I'd like to put a remanufactured motor in it this summer but I am kind of skeptical about some of the places I have seen offering rebuilt motors for sale because of the use of cheap parts.

Can some of you guys give me a heads up on where I could find a correctly rebuilt motor for this rig? I would rather pay a little more and get a good one than error on the cheap side.

Those seem to be high quality rebuilds but the motors are modified. Anybody rebuilding stock engines? Or any ides what an new OEM motor may cost? I was hoping to find something in the $2000 range. Is it possible to get a good rebuilt motor in that range or do I have to step a little higher? This will not be a daily driver, would get about 2-3,000 miles a year. Some highway & some dirt road and some fire road usage.
 
Purchased and installed a 67 302 from S&S engine rebuilders bout 7 yrs ago and very pleased, they offer a 7 yr. warranty but imagine there are a few disclaimers, especially if it a 'diy' installation. They occasionally offer used engines; perhaps other members can offer opinion on rebuilt vs. used? Appears used engines are listed according to location and I believe S&S will provide quote for cost and shipping??

Usually don't rec, had on occasion found the referrant was not satisfied; in this case, when and if it comes time to replace/rebuild the engine on the 90 T4R I will probly go thru S&S.
 
toyotacarpart.com has been building these for many years. They're reasonably priced and have a decent warranty, too. They're out of Colorado Springs. I bought one of their 3.0 V6's a few years back, and they treated me right.
 
I just pulled a 22re out of an 87. If you get an engine, you will probably need some of what I have: 4x4 oil pan, flywheel, crank pulley or any pulley, distributor, motor mounts, ect. I already sold the engine harness. I also have exhaust parts, W56 tranny with transfer case, driveshafts, IFS stuff, ect.

So, PM me if you need any thing. I have an entire 22RE to part out , including alt., starter, ect.

Toyotacarpart has remanufactured engines and "new" engines. Are the "new" engines OEM Toyota motors with all OEM parts? If so, that is the direction I would like to go.

Supkar, my engine is still in my rig so it's complete, the motor is just blown due to my previous stupidity. I should have all the necessary parts to put a long block back together.
 
I'm not sure about the new engines--I bought a reman'd one myself, and didn't look into the others (price was a concern at the time). If it doesn't cover everything on the site, I'd just give them a call--when I dealt with them, they took the time to answer any question I had.

Toyota stopped making the 22R/RE in 1995, so you can't buy a new Toyota built engine.
You can get remanned or rebuilt long blocks and short from many places on the web if you look, but who knows about the quality.

One place I have seen mentioned on numerous Toyota sites is Oregon Engine Builders, all good comments, no bad. They may be worth a look.
 
Just spoke with Toyotacarpart.com on the phone, they said the "new" motor is in fact just that. A brand new 22RE not a remanufactured motor. They told me they are directly imported from Japan and are no longer available in the USA from dealers.

3 Year unlimited mile warranty on the motor. $75 shipping to the midwest(Minnesota), an additional $75 charge if dropped off at a private residence or no charge if dropped off at an established business. Add an extra $150 if you do not want to return your core to them.

This is probably the motor I will be buying.
 
Think I found their website; is so, could not find their address?? Might be interested in replacement tranny if I knew where to send the core?

Go on Craigs list Fredericksburg VA I saw it this week a new 2.2 motor not rebuilt, crate motor new with photo.
