Where do I run a fused line from the battery to an amplifier?

Installing an Alpine power pack amp...
need to run a fused line from the battery to inside near where radio sits
Is there a pass/hole through the fender? Firewall?
Or Do I need to drill?

I ran a fused lead to a Kenwood amp I mounted under the passenger seat. I drilled a hole through the sidewall (firewall?) and fed the line into the right fender well. Then passed it with other wiring through the firewall, slipping it in with the loom. Use grommets and protection everywhere you pass through the metal to save yourself the headache!

And yes, to do it right will take you some time. Quick and easy looks like crap and has a tendency to burn things. Which is cool. Once.

There should be holes on either side of the firewall. As Hangininutah said, insulate wherever abrasion points are, not a bad idea to dielectric connections that are exposed to elements as well

The door sill plate pops off with a few screws, I like running wire under that.

you know they put two of these grommets in the firewall for a reason right?
just run parallel to another or cut the nipple off and make a new port.
don't run anything electrical outside the wheel well or through the door jam. all it takes is a hungry rodent or a pinched cable and next thing you know your truck is up in flames..

Yes, we know what grommets are for, but that^^ is not where grommets are in O.P.'s first-generation 4Runner.
On first-generation 4Runners wires between cabin and engine compartment run where I showed above (here again).

Definitely not the door jamb, but the inside and along the door sill, as Dropzone says^^^ is good; That's where wires run between dash and rear of the truck.

Only "Doc" would run wires outside the wheel-well .

Pictures above clearly show that the wires are ran INSIDE the upper wheel-well area, not outside wheel-well, above the splash guard. The engine compartment is no more rodent-proof than the space within the wheel-well, unless you shroud your engine compartment with wire mesh

As long as you place the fuse as close to the battery terminal as possible you shouldn't have problems with your car setting on fire. I've done it the wrong way :flame: Any part of the wire that isn't fused can overload and get hot enough to catch the insulation on fire and melt through any other nearby wires causing a mess. Put the fuse near the battery terminal and it will pop before the wire has enough load to burn. I actually have an alpine power pack, which has it's own fuse iirc, but you should still run a second fuse for this reason.
