where exactly to place axle/jack stands on the front end

I will now manifest my ignorance in automotive maintenance:

Is there a proper way to support the vehicle frame on jack stands? I know for the rear I should be able to rest the axle housing on the stands, but what about the front? The frame is a lot wider than the curved (U-shaped) top piece of the stand? Can I rest the frame right on it like that?

Yes, there are many places on the frame to set the jack stands. I use 6 stands total. I put the whole truck up on 4 (usually do oil and lube both) and use 2 lighter duty ones as backups for whichever end I'm under.

thanks guys, one more question: is it ok to only lift the front end and have it resting on stands, or should all corners be lifted to keep it more stable on the stands?

If you must lift the front end only ramps are a more stable platform. Don't forget to chock the rear wheels.

Like Texrex said, chock the other end if you do. The only reason I put it up on 4 stands is so I can turn the drive shafts by hand when doing the lube. Also better for tire rotation. Ramps are great if you don't need the stands.

Some ramps are a PITA to drive onto.
