Where is your spare tire?

The chances of getting a flat tire from just driving around on paved roads are astronomically small IMO.

I've been driving for 20 years and have only ever gotten a flat tire once.

If I guesstimate the mileage I've put on all my vehicles, that's about 1 flat tire in 350,000 miles of driving in 20 years.

With the advent of the cell phone too.. what's the point of lugging around the extra weight? Again, for daily driving. We have 2 vehicles and a motorcycle at home. Worse comes to worse, I'd just need to give a call to my wife to come pick me up so I can fetch the spare at home, or if we're both together, call a cab or uber to take us home and do the same.

I dunno.. I feel like I profit more from the extra fuel economy from not carrying around a 75lb+ spare.

So unless I know that the chances of me being stranded are higher, I just leave it at home.

I'm more afraid of an LBJ failing on the 4Runner. Getting a flat tire doesn't worry me.

You're a very careful / attentive driver it seems. Cheers to no flats!

I dunno about driving around without a spare. I've had two flats on my 4R, both from nails. And, I've had several flats over the years on other vehicles, mostly from nails, screws, etc. I don't know how any of them could have been avoided by being more careful. Being able to change a tire without a lot of fuss is pretty important to me.

The other issue I have is that with the lift, the OEM jack is useless. I'd need a taller jack or lug around some sort of base for it.

your doing it wrong then. put the jack under the axle in the rear to lift the wheel up, on the front I put it right onto one of the big rivets for the lbj mount. people that have 80 series on 37" axles are using the stock jack so please just learn how to do it.

My rear tire carrier was $1000 and made locally. I did fit a new 285/75/R17 under the stock location by moving the factory hitch out an inch.

Yeah, under the axles the stock jack should work just fine.


How important is it for me to have a full size spare? I just put 255/75/17's (32.1" tall) on my 3rd Gen, but my spare is a 265/70/16 (30.6"). I have an extra matching tire that is a 255/75/17, but there is no way it will fit under the truck. It wasn't even close to fitting.... It is a 4WD, but it has multimode, so I think I would be OK to run the smaller spare when I'm in 2WD, or even AWD without the center diff locked. I wouldn't do this for a long time, just enough to get home. I've never even had a flat, nor can I even remember anyone in my family having one growing up. We never let our tires get even close to bad before replacing. Thoughts?

Stock location is the best for the vehicle but it is boring. We buy these nice tires and they should be shown. I think the roof is a bad spot for a tire. Rear is the best after the stock location. Here is mine. It is soon to be replaced. A tire on the rear transforms the 4runner imo...

I guess, I just don't tend to jack my vehicles up this way. I prefer using the jacking points on the frame. But in a pinch, you're right, this is the way to do it.

A tire on the rear transforms the 4runner imo...

It does, but I actually don't like the look. Especially on '96 to '98 that have the snub nose bumper. It makes the rig look so rear end heavy.

Alright, thanks. Any issues with doing this? I may do this and run a full size spare, then I could do a 5 tire rotation as well, and get a little more life out of the tires since I have 5 anyway...

We must have different hitches. I went and looked at mine and there's not even enough material on it to drill a hole 1 inch farther back on the front holes closest to the front of the truck...

Nice work on that rear tire vertical swing out. Read the YT thread, and I may think about trying it one of these days for that kind of dough.
