Where should I connect my new stereo's "dimmer" wire?

This wire will tell my double DIN head unit whether to be bright or dim. I think there are a few options:

low beams:
good: autodim at night, plus manual dimming by turning on the headlights
bad: the head unit may return to "bright" when I use hi beams

autolights:
good: autodim at night, won't be affected by use of hi beams
bad: no manual control (besides through the clunky head unit menus)

tail lights (assuming there is a wire for this):
good: autodim at night, plus manual control by turning on either the parking lights or the headlights
bad: if I hit the brakes will the taillight signal change, causing the head unit to return to "bright"?

Did the wiring harness you connected your aftermarket headunit not have a dimmer wire? Why are you debating where to wire it up to?

It should be your lowbeams in theory. Turn on low beams, headunit dims out.

Even with "auto" on, you can just turn the headlights back to "off" when you don't want it to be on.

Don't over think it man.

I don't think I used a harness. I gutted the JBL Synthesis, added new amps, ran all new speaker wire, etc. It was over two years ago, and it went through a few iterations, so I'm not 100% on that. Which wire is it on the stock harness? I could tap into that.

What aftermarket brand do you have? Mine's a Kenwood and one of the few disappointments with it is that connecting the dimmer wire 1) caused radio interference when the lights are on* and 2) didn't do enough dimming to even bother. Just something to consider.

* Headlights are stock, not any of the kinds that can cause such interference.
